Winter Outdoor Living in Oklahoma — Staying Outside When It Gets Cold

by | May 19, 2026 | Uncategorized

Oklahoma winters are mild by national standards — but they’re variable enough that most homeowners put away the outdoor furniture in November and don’t think about it again until March. That’s 4-5 months of unused outdoor space. With the right setup, you can significantly extend your outdoor season into December, January, and February — and actually enjoy it.

Oklahoma’s Winter Outdoor Living Reality

Tulsa averages 47°F in January — with regular days in the 50s and 60s mixed in among the cold snaps. A well-heated covered outdoor space can be comfortable at those temperatures. December and February are milder still. The challenge isn’t the average temperature — it’s the occasional cold snap, ice storm, or north wind that cuts through without protection.

What You Need for Winter Outdoor Living

1. An Enclosed or Covered Space

You cannot enjoy outdoor winter living in Oklahoma without protection from the wind and cold. An open patio in 35°F weather with a 15-mph north wind is genuinely miserable. A covered patio or pavilion that blocks the wind transforms the experience. Add side screens or curtains to close off the north and west sides in winter and you have a genuinely sheltered outdoor room.

2. Propane or Electric Patio Heaters

The right heaters make or break winter outdoor comfort:

  • Ceiling-mounted propane heaters — the best permanent solution for covered patios. 40,000-60,000 BTU units can keep a 12×20 covered space comfortable to low 30s ambient temperature. Heat from above like a sun, no floor space used.
  • Electric infrared heaters — wall or ceiling mounted, instant on, no propane required. Less BTU output than propane but excellent for mild cool weather in the 40s-50s.
  • Freestanding propane patio heaters — the classic mushroom-top heater. Portable, no installation, lower output, but a good starting point before committing to a permanent system.

3. A Fire Feature

A fire pit or outdoor fireplace creates a warm gathering zone that keeps people outside longer than any other feature. Wood-burning fire creates that authentic winter campfire experience. Gas fire features (instant on, no wood to haul in cold weather) are increasingly popular for casual winter use. Either option dramatically extends the comfortable outdoor evening window into November, December, and beyond.

4. Windbreaks

Oklahoma’s winter winds predominantly come from the north and northwest. Strategic windbreaks — a solid fence, a privacy screen, mature evergreen plantings — on the north and west sides of your outdoor space can make 35°F feel like 45°F. When designing outdoor living spaces, we always consider prevailing wind direction and design windbreaks into the plan for year-round usability.

Winter Outdoor Entertainment Ideas

  • Oklahoma football watching parties — OU and OSU games run well into November. A covered, heated outdoor setup with outdoor TV is perfect for post-season games.
  • Holiday gatherings — Thanksgiving through New Year’s is prime fire pit season. The fire creates a natural gathering point for family and friends during holiday visits.
  • Slow cooking and smoking — winter is low-and-slow season. Oklahoma winters are perfect for 12-hour brisket smokes where you check on it every hour or so in the fresh cold air.
  • Morning coffee outside — even in January, Oklahoma often has mild enough mornings (mid-40s) that a covered, heated patio with a hot coffee is a pleasant way to start the day.

Plan Your Year-Round Setup Now

The best time to plan for winter outdoor living is before you build. Propane heaters, electrical rough-in for electric heaters, gas line sizing, covered structure orientation — all of these are far easier and cheaper to incorporate during construction than to retrofit later.
