Outdoor Kitchen Counter Height & Design Specs in Oklahoma | VistaScapes

Outdoor kitchen dimensions — counter height, counter depth, bar height, and appliance clearances — are fixed once masonry construction is complete. Getting them wrong means living with an awkward workspace indefinitely. Here are the practical specifications VistaScapes uses on outdoor kitchen projects throughout Tulsa and Broken Arrow.

Standard Counter Height: 36 Inches

Outdoor kitchen counter height follows the same standard as indoor kitchen counters: 36 inches from finished floor (or patio surface) to the top of the countertop. This height accommodates typical appliances (built-in grills, side burners, refrigerators, and sinks are all designed for 36-inch rough-in height) and is the ergonomically correct prep and cooking surface height for most adults. Don’t deviate from 36 inches for the primary cooking and prep counter — appliance fitment is designed around this dimension.

Bar Counter Height: 42 Inches

If the kitchen includes a bar overhang — a section of counter extended to accommodate bar stools on the guest side — the bar surface is typically 42 inches tall (counter stool height) while the work surface behind it is 36 inches. The 6-inch step-up between the work counter and bar counter is handled in the masonry frame construction. Bar stools for 42-inch bar height are 28-30 inches seat height. Specify bar height (42 inches) upfront — changing it after framing is a full rebuild.

Counter Depth: 24-30 Inches

Standard outdoor kitchen counter depth is 24 inches for a grill-only straight run (matching built-in grill width requirements) to 28-30 inches for counters with refrigerators, undercounter storage, or larger grills. Deep counters (30+ inches) feel more worklike and are appropriate for full-kitchen builds; shallow counters (24 inches) are appropriate for basic grill stations. Side counters adjacent to bar seating are often 24 inches deep to keep bar stools at a comfortable reach distance.

Clearances and Spacing for Oklahoma Outdoor Kitchens

  • Grill to combustible surface: Gas grills require minimum 12 inches of non-combustible surface on each side of the grill opening; masonry provides this automatically
  • Work aisle width: 42-48 inches minimum between facing counter runs in an L-shape or U-shape kitchen; 36 inches minimum for a single-wall straight run with clear walkway
  • Sink rough-in: Plumbing rough-in should be confirmed with your plumber before framing; standard outdoor sink rough-in matches indoor 2-inch drain and 1/2-inch supply lines
  • Refrigerator clearance: Built-in outdoor refrigerators require 1 inch of clearance on each side for air circulation; specify this in the masonry frame dimensions
