Adding an Outdoor TV and Entertainment System to Your Outdoor Kitchen

by | May 20, 2026 | Uncategorized

An outdoor TV turns your outdoor kitchen into a full entertainment destination — game day viewing, movie nights under the stars, watching the grill while streaming. But outdoor TVs and entertainment systems have specific requirements that differ from indoor installations. Here’s what Broken Arrow and Tulsa homeowners need to know before planning outdoor AV in their outdoor kitchen.

Outdoor-Rated TVs vs Indoor TVs Outdoors

The most important rule: don’t put an indoor TV outside in Oklahoma’s climate. The humidity, heat, and cold will destroy an indoor TV within a season or two. Outdoor-rated TVs are built for this — sealed against moisture and insects, capable of operating in ambient temperatures from freezing to 100°F, and bright enough to be visible in Oklahoma’s intense sunlight.

The main categories of outdoor TV:

  • Full sun / direct sunlight rated: 1,000+ nits of brightness — visible in direct Oklahoma sun. These are the brightest and most expensive. Brands: SunBrite Pro, Séura Shade Series. Cost: $1,500–$5,000+
  • Partial sun / shade rated: 700–1,000 nits — appropriate for covered patios and pergolas where the TV is in shade most of the time. Brands: SunBrite Veranda, Samsung Terrace. Cost: $800–$3,000+

Placement: Where to Put the TV in Your Outdoor Kitchen

The ideal outdoor kitchen TV placement:

  • Under a covered structure: Always position your outdoor TV under a pergola, patio cover, or roof extension. This dramatically reduces glare, protects the screen from direct rain, and reduces heat load on the TV components.
  • At viewing height for seated guests: Mount the TV at a height visible to guests seated at bar stools or at a dining table — typically 50–60 inches to the center of the screen for bar seating viewers.
  • Not behind the grill: Don’t mount a TV where guests watch through grill smoke. Keep the TV on the opposite side of the kitchen island from the grill, or on a side wall facing the dining/seating area.

Weatherproof Audio for Your Outdoor Kitchen

Outdoor-rated speakers built into the pergola structure or mounted on the patio wall create a significantly better audio experience than the TV’s built-in speakers — which are designed for indoor acoustics, not open-air sound. Weather-rated speakers from Sonance, Polk Audio, and Klipsch provide excellent outdoor sound. A simple 2-speaker stereo setup under a pergola with a weatherproof receiver or stream-amp is sufficient for most outdoor kitchens.

Cable and Power Planning

Plan power and cable runs during the outdoor kitchen construction phase — not after. You need:

  • A dedicated GFCI-protected outdoor outlet at TV mounting height (not an extension cord — run conduit during construction)
  • HDMI and coax conduit if you’ll be running cable from the house to the outdoor TV location
  • Speaker wire conduit if you’re adding in-wall speakers to the pergola structure

VistaScapes coordinates with electricians on every outdoor kitchen build to rough-in the right outlets and conduit for outdoor AV in the right locations before any structure is covered.
