How Long Does It Take to Build an Outdoor Kitchen in Oklahoma?
One of the first questions we get from Broken Arrow and Tulsa homeowners is: “How long will this take?” Fair question — a big backyard project disrupts your outdoor space and you want a realistic timeline before you commit.
Here’s the honest breakdown for an outdoor kitchen project in the Tulsa metro area.
The Full Timeline: Design to Done
Phase 1: Design and Estimate (1–2 Weeks)
After an initial consultation, we create a concept design with layout, materials, and appliance selections. Once you approve the design and sign a contract, we begin the material ordering process. Custom countertop slabs need to be measured and fabricated — that alone takes 7–14 days from template to delivery.
Phase 2: Permitting (1–4 Weeks, if Required)
In Broken Arrow, most outdoor kitchen structures over 200 square feet or any structure with electrical and gas require a building permit. The City of Broken Arrow’s building department typically processes residential permits in 1–3 weeks. We submit permits the moment the contract is signed to minimize wait time.
Projects that don’t require permits (simple grill islands under 200 sq ft, on an existing patio, with existing utilities) can skip to Phase 3 immediately.
Phase 3: Site Prep and Foundation (3–5 Days)
We excavate and pour concrete footings for any posts or the kitchen base. If you’re adding a new concrete patio pad, that happens here too. The concrete needs 5–7 days to cure before we build on it, though we typically begin the framing work on the cured sections while other areas finish curing.
Phase 4: Framing and Rough-In (3–7 Days)
CMU block or steel stud framing goes up. The gas plumber runs the gas line and tests pressure. The electrician runs conduit and rough-in wiring. All of this happens before the countertops go on.
Phase 5: Inspections (1–5 Days)
For permitted projects, the city inspector needs to approve the framing, gas, and electrical rough-in before we can close everything up. In Broken Arrow, inspections are usually scheduled within 1–3 business days of request. If the inspector has corrections, we address them and re-inspect.
Phase 6: Countertops and Finish Work (3–5 Days)
The granite or quartzite slab is templated, cut, and installed. Stone or tile finishes go on the cabinet faces. Appliances are set. Electrical fixtures are installed. Plumbing is connected.
Phase 7: Final Inspection and Touch-Ups (1–3 Days)
Final city inspection for permitted projects. We test all appliances, gas connections, and electrical. Touch-up the finish work. Walk you through the space.
Realistic Total Timelines
| Project Type | Permit Required? | Typical Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Simple grill island (no structure, existing patio) | No | 2–3 weeks |
| Freestanding kitchen island with gas + electric | Maybe | 4–6 weeks |
| Full outdoor kitchen with covered structure | Yes | 6–10 weeks |
| Outdoor kitchen + pool surround + fire feature | Yes | 10–16 weeks |
What Slows Projects Down
- Permit delays — Some Tulsa suburb municipalities process faster than others. Broken Arrow is typically 1–3 weeks. Coweta and Catoosa can be faster.
- Countertop fabrication — Custom stone slabs take 10–14 days. If the slab you want is backordered, add 1–3 weeks.
- Appliance lead times — Certain high-end grill brands have 4–8 week lead times. We recommend finalizing your appliance selection before signing so we can order immediately.
- Weather — Oklahoma’s spring weather (heavy rain) can pause concrete pours and masonry work. We build weather delays into estimates.
- Change orders — Mid-project changes reset some timelines. Decide early.
