Built-In vs. Freestanding Kegerators
There’s a significant difference between a freestanding kegerator you move from the garage to the patio and a built-in outdoor kegerator permanently integrated into your outdoor kitchen:
- Built-in outdoor kegerators are designed for permanent installation in an outdoor kitchen cabinet bay — front-venting, weatherproofed, and engineered for outdoor ambient temperatures
- Freestanding kegerators are typically indoor units and will overheat or fail quickly in outdoor cabinet installations without proper ventilation
We install only purpose-built outdoor kegerators. The most common: Perlick HP24TS — Perlick’s 24-inch outdoor keg tap with a single-tap tower, rated for outdoor installation in ambient temperatures up to 110°F.
Kegerator Configuration Options
Single-Tap Setup
One keg, one tap. Fits in a 24-inch cabinet bay. Perfect for homeowners who stick to one beer style at a time — rotate kegs seasonally. Perlick HP24TS is the standard recommendation.
Dual-Tap Setup
Two taps from two separate kegs — typically requires a wider cabinet bay or two adjacent kegerator units. Popular for homeowners who want to offer two beer styles simultaneously: a lager and an IPA, a seasonal and a year-round, etc.
Kegerator + Refrigerator Combination
A kegerator for draft beer plus an adjacent refrigerator for bottles, canned drinks, and bar prep. The most common bar-focused outdoor kitchen configuration — guests can access draft beer from the tap while the refrigerator holds overflow drinks and food items.
CO2 System Integration
Kegerators require CO2 to push beer from the keg to the tap. We design CO2 tank storage into the outdoor kitchen cabinet layout — typically a lockable cabinet bay adjacent to the kegerator with proper ventilation. CO2 tanks should never be stored in completely sealed enclosed spaces.
Tap Tower Design
The tap tower mounts on top of the kegerator and should be specified to match the outdoor kitchen’s overall design direction. Stainless steel towers complement most outdoor kitchen aesthetics. Custom tower heights can be specified to clear the countertop at comfortable serving height.
