Outdoor Kitchen Bar Design for Oklahoma Homeowners
A built-in outdoor bar transforms your backyard from a cooking station into a full entertainment destination. Oklahoma homeowners increasingly incorporate dedicated bar areas into their outdoor kitchen designs — separate from the cooking zone but integrated into the overall outdoor living space. Here’s everything you need to know about designing an outdoor bar that works beautifully year-round in Oklahoma’s climate.
Types of Outdoor Bars We Build
Peninsula Bar — Attached to the Kitchen Island
The most common configuration. The bar top extends from one end of the outdoor kitchen island, creating a natural serving and seating area directly adjacent to the grill and prep stations. Bar-height seating (28–30 inch stools) lines the guest side while the cook works on the kitchen side. Efficient, social, and space-conscious.
Freestanding Bar Island
A separate bar structure positioned near the outdoor kitchen but distinct from it. Often used when the primary kitchen island is large enough that a peninsula would create traffic flow problems, or when the homeowner wants a clearly defined “bar zone” separate from the cooking area. Can include a kegerator, wine fridge, and cocktail prep sink independent of the main kitchen.
L-Shaped or U-Shaped Bar Configuration
Creates an enclosed bar experience with the host inside the bar and guests on the outside on three sides. Popular for larger outdoor entertainment spaces on Broken Arrow and Tulsa properties with dedicated outdoor entertaining as the primary use case.
Bar Top Material Options for Oklahoma
Bar tops take more abuse than any other outdoor kitchen surface — drinks, heat, UV exposure, and constant contact. Oklahoma’s climate adds freeze-thaw stress on top. The right materials:
- Granite — The most durable bar top option. Heat resistant, stain resistant (sealed), and handles Oklahoma winters without issue. Recommend honed finish for a bar top — polished surfaces show rings and scratches more visibly.
- Quartzite — Lighter in color than most granites, excellent durability. A premium option with a natural stone look.
- Sealed concrete — Allows custom shapes, built-in drainboards, and integral color matching your overall design. Requires annual resealing.
- Porcelain tile — Budget-friendly option with good durability. Large-format tiles (24×24 or larger) create a seamless look on bar tops.
We never use engineered quartz for outdoor bar tops. The resins in engineered quartz degrade under Oklahoma UV exposure — it’s an indoor material.
Built-In Bar Appliances
Outdoor Refrigerators
Perlick and True Manufacturing make the best outdoor-rated refrigerators for Oklahoma’s climate. These units are designed to operate in ambient temperatures up to 110°F — important for Oklahoma summers where standard outdoor refrigerators struggle. Sized from compact 24-inch bar fridges to full 48-inch beverage centers.
Kegerators
Built-in kegerators are a popular bar addition for outdoor kitchens in Oklahoma. Options range from single-tap systems to dual or triple tap setups. We install dedicated kegerator units rated for outdoor use — not indoor units placed outside, which fail rapidly in Oklahoma heat.
Ice Makers
Scotsman and Hoshizaki make the best outdoor-rated ice makers. A dedicated outdoor ice maker eliminates running inside for ice constantly during parties. Produces 50–80 lbs of ice per day in most residential models.
Cocktail Prep Sink
A small bar sink — 9 to 15 inches — dedicated to the bar area separate from the main kitchen prep sink. Connected to your outdoor water supply. Makes cocktail prep and cleanup dramatically easier.
Wine Refrigerators
Outdoor-rated wine coolers maintain cellar temperatures even in Oklahoma summers. Look for units with dual-zone temperature control for reds and whites simultaneously.
Bar Seating Design for Oklahoma
Bar seating needs to work for Oklahoma’s outdoor conditions:
- Counter height vs bar height — Counter height (34–36 inches) is more comfortable for longer gatherings. Bar height (40–42 inches) creates a more traditional bar feel.
- Seat material — All-weather wicker, powder-coated aluminum, or teak are the appropriate choices for Oklahoma. Avoid materials that retain heat in summer sun — dark metal seat surfaces can reach painful temperatures on 100°F days.
- Shade consideration — Bar seating should be under or adjacent to your shade structure. Bar guests sitting in full Oklahoma summer sun will not stay long.
- Number of seats — Plan for 24 inches of bar top per seat minimum. A 10-foot bar accommodates 4–5 guests comfortably.
Lighting the Outdoor Bar
Bar areas need layered lighting for evening entertaining:
- Under-counter LED strips — Illuminate the bar face and create ambient glow at seating level
- Overhead pendants or recessed lights — Task lighting for the bar top surface
- LED rope lighting — Outlines the bar structure perimeter for visual definition
- Smart controls — Lutron or similar outdoor smart lighting lets you set the bar mood from your phone
