How Long Does It Take to Build an Outdoor Kitchen in Oklahoma?

One of the most common questions we get during the planning phase of outdoor kitchen projects: how long will this take? The answer depends on the scope and complexity of your project, permit processing times in your municipality, and whether any custom-order appliances are involved. Here’s a realistic, complete timeline for outdoor kitchen projects in the Tulsa metro and northeast Oklahoma.

Phase 1: Initial Consultation and Design (Week 1–2)

The process begins with a free on-site consultation at your property. During this visit, we walk your backyard, discuss your lifestyle and entertaining vision, take measurements, and begin the design conversation. After the consultation:

  • Design drawings: We produce detailed design drawings showing island dimensions, appliance locations, shade structure footprint, and overall layout — typically delivered within 5-10 business days of the consultation
  • Written estimate: Delivered with the design drawings or shortly after, itemizing material costs, labor, appliance costs, and permit fees
  • Revision rounds: Most projects go through 1-2 design revision rounds before arriving at a final approved design

Total Phase 1 duration: 1-2 weeks from initial consultation to signed contract.

Phase 2: Permitting (Week 2–5)

After the contract is signed, we submit permit applications to the relevant municipality. Permit processing times in the Tulsa metro vary significantly by city:

  • Broken Arrow: Typically 2-3 weeks for a complete outdoor kitchen permit package (building, electrical, gas)
  • Tulsa: Typically 3-4 weeks; can extend to 5-6 weeks during high-volume construction seasons (spring and summer)
  • Bixby, Jenks, Owasso: Typically 2-3 weeks
  • Unincorporated county areas: Often 1-2 weeks

During the permitting phase, we also order appliances (grills, refrigerators, ice makers, pizza ovens) and any custom-fabricated materials. Appliance lead times:

  • Standard in-stock appliances (Blaze, Coyote, most Perlick models): 1-2 weeks
  • Premium appliances (Lynx, Fire Magic, Kalamazoo): 3-6 weeks depending on model and availability
  • Custom or imported pizza ovens (Mugnaini, Forno Bravo custom): 6-12 weeks

Total Phase 2 duration: 2-4 weeks (running concurrent with permit processing).

Phase 3: Site Preparation (Days 1-3 of Construction)

Once permits are approved and materials are staged, construction begins with site preparation:

  • Utility locates (required 48 hours before any excavation)
  • Excavation for footing or slab where required
  • Form-up and pour concrete foundation or slab
  • Concrete cure time: 3-5 days before building on top (we build other elements during this time)

Phase 4: Structural Build (Days 3-8 of Construction)

With the foundation cured, we lay the CMU block structure for the outdoor kitchen island:

  • CMU block laying and mortar cure
  • Rough-in conduit and gas line stub-outs in the block
  • Anchor bolt placement for shade structure posts (if applicable)
  • Backer board preparation for countertop and tile surfaces

Phase 5: Shade Structure Construction (Days 5-12)

If a covered patio, pergola, or pavilion is part of the project, this phase runs concurrently with or immediately following the island structure:

  • Post installation and beam framing
  • Roofing material installation (metal, shingle, tile, or louvered system)
  • Soffit work if included
  • Trim and fascia

Phase 6: Electrical, Gas, and Plumbing (Concurrent, Days 6-12)

Trade work runs concurrently with structural and finishing work:

  • Electrical rough-in and connection to home panel
  • Gas line rough-in and pressure testing
  • Plumbing supply and drain rough-in
  • Inspector visits for rough-in approval (varies by municipality)

Phase 7: Finish Work (Days 10-18)

  • Tile or stone veneer on island exterior surfaces
  • Countertop templating and fabrication (granite, quartzite, porcelain)
  • Countertop installation and sealing
  • Appliance installation and connection
  • Door and drawer hardware installation
  • Lighting installation and connection
  • Caulk, grout, and sealant work
  • Final electrical and gas inspection

Phase 8: Final Inspection and Walkthrough (Day 18-21)

  • Final building, electrical, and gas inspections with city inspector
  • Site cleanup and patio cleaning
  • Owner walkthrough — we demonstrate all appliances and systems
  • Warranty documentation provided

Total Timeline Summary

  • Simple outdoor kitchen (linear island, no shade structure): 5-7 weeks from signed contract to completion
  • Mid-range outdoor kitchen with pergola: 7-10 weeks from signed contract to completion
  • Premium outdoor living room with covered patio and fireplace: 10-16 weeks from signed contract to completion

Note: Custom appliance lead times (pizza ovens, premium grill brands) can extend the timeline beyond these estimates. We communicate appliance lead times clearly at the estimate stage so you can plan accordingly.

When Should You Start Planning?

If you want your outdoor kitchen ready for summer entertaining in Oklahoma, here’s when to start:

  • Target completion by Memorial Day (late May): Start the consultation process by late February
  • Target completion by Fourth of July: Start by late March to early April
  • Target completion by Labor Day: Start by June

We build year-round in Oklahoma — winter builds are often faster because permit offices are less busy and material deliveries are quicker. Some of our most popular projects are built in October–February for spring-ready delivery.
