Outdoor Kitchen Spring Opening Checklist — Get Your Oklahoma Backyard Ready to Cook

by | May 23, 2026 | Uncategorized

Oklahoma’s outdoor season kicks off in earnest by late March or April — and the homeowners who get the most out of their outdoor kitchen are the ones who invest an afternoon in spring prep before the first big cookout. Here’s a complete spring opening checklist for Oklahoma outdoor kitchens.

Grill and Cooking Appliance Check

  • Remove grill covers and inspect for winter damage — look for rust spots, cracked porcelain grates, deteriorated igniters
  • Clean the grill grates thoroughly — soak in hot soapy water, scrub with a wire brush, rinse and dry
  • Inspect burner tubes for spider webs and insect nests — these are extremely common after a winter of non-use and can block gas flow or cause unsafe flare-ups. Use a pipe cleaner or soft brush to clear blocked burner ports.
  • Turn on the gas and test each burner for even flame — an uneven or yellow flame indicates a blocked burner port
  • Test the igniter on each burner — igniters deteriorate over winter. If an igniter isn’t sparking, replace the battery or the igniter module before the season starts.
  • Clean the drip tray and dispose of accumulated grease
  • Wipe the exterior stainless surfaces with stainless cleaner

Gas Line and Utility Check

  • Turn on the outdoor kitchen gas shutoff valve (if you shut it off for winter)
  • Soap-test all gas connections at the shutoff valve and at each appliance connection — bubbles indicate a leak. If you find a leak, do not use any appliance until it’s repaired by a licensed plumber.
  • Verify the shutoff valve opens and closes smoothly — corroded or stiff valves should be replaced
  • If you have propane, check the tank level and refill if needed before the first big cook

Refrigerator and Ice Maker

  • If you unplugged the outdoor refrigerator for winter, plug it back in and allow 4-6 hours to reach operating temperature before loading food
  • Clean the interior and all door seals — mold can develop in a stored refrigerator if the door was sealed completely during winter
  • Clean the condenser coils (usually accessible from the front grille on outdoor-rated models)
  • If you have a built-in ice maker, flush the water line by running one or two full production cycles and discarding that ice

Countertop and Surface Check

  • Inspect sealed granite or concrete countertops for surface staining or micro-cracks from winter freeze-thaw cycles
  • Re-seal granite or concrete countertops if they’re due for annual maintenance (test with a water drop — if it absorbs within a minute, re-seal)
  • Inspect grout lines on tile countertops for cracks or deterioration
  • Clean the patio surface — a stiff brush and hose removes winter pollen, leaves, and debris from concrete and pavers

Structure and Lighting Check

  • Inspect the pergola structure for winter weather damage — cracks in wood, loose fasteners, damaged cross-beams
  • Test all outdoor lighting fixtures — replace any bulbs that didn’t survive winter
  • Check outdoor electrical outlets for moisture damage — press the TEST and RESET buttons on all GFCI outlets
