How to Winterize Your Outdoor Kitchen in Oklahoma — End-of-Season Checklist

by | May 23, 2026 | Uncategorized

Oklahoma winters are unpredictable — a warm October can give way to a hard November freeze, and ice storms can arrive with very little warning. An outdoor kitchen that isn’t properly protected heading into winter is vulnerable to cracked countertops from standing water, damaged appliance components, frozen and burst water lines, and deteriorated stainless surfaces. The good news: proper winterization takes two to four hours and prevents the kind of damage that requires expensive repairs in spring. This checklist covers what Oklahoma outdoor kitchen owners should do before cold weather settles in. Questions? Call VistaScapes Design & Build at 918-779-1317.

Gas Lines and Appliances

  • Turn off gas at the shutoff valve — the last valve before the first appliance on the outdoor kitchen gas line. Do not simply rely on individual appliance valves.
  • Disconnect propane tanks if applicable. Store 20lb or 100lb tanks upright in a shaded, ventilated area. Do not store propane in enclosed spaces like garages or sheds.
  • Clean burner tubes and ports before closing down. Spider nests and insect debris are a fire hazard and the number one cause of ignition failure in the spring. Remove burners if possible and clean with a wire brush.
  • Cover all grill and burner openings to prevent animal and insect access through the winter.

Water Lines and Plumbing

  • Shut off water supply to the outdoor kitchen at the shutoff valve nearest the outdoor connection — typically inside the house or in a valve box near the foundation.
  • Drain all water lines by opening the outdoor faucet or sink valve after shutting off supply. Let it drain completely.
  • Drain the outdoor sink trap by removing any standing water. Traps that freeze can crack.
  • If you have an outdoor ice maker: drain and shut off the water supply line to the ice maker; drain the reservoir and water tray completely.
  • Blow out lines with compressed air if the outdoor kitchen has a complex plumbing run — this eliminates any remaining water that could freeze and crack fittings.

Refrigerators and Appliances

  • Outdoor-rated refrigerators are designed to handle lower ambient temperatures than indoor units, but extended periods below freezing can stress compressors. If your outdoor kitchen isn’t covered, consider moving the refrigerator inside or unplugging and cleaning it for winter storage.
  • Unplug all appliances that won’t be in use, including the outdoor refrigerator if you’re shutting down entirely.
  • Clean the grill interior thoroughly before covering — grease left in the drip tray over winter becomes extremely difficult to remove by spring and can attract pests.

Countertops and Surfaces

  • Apply a fresh coat of stone sealer to granite or natural stone countertops before winter. Sealers protect against moisture penetration, and any water that enters an unsealed countertop surface will freeze, expand, and can crack the stone.
  • Porcelain countertops are highly resistant to freeze-thaw damage and require minimal winterization beyond keeping standing water cleared.
  • Clean and protect stainless surfaces with a stainless steel polish that creates a protective barrier against winter moisture and oxidation.

Covers and Physical Protection

  • Cover the grill with a quality, properly fitted outdoor grill cover. Do not use a cover that traps moisture — look for covers with ventilation or lift the cover on sunny winter days to air out.
  • Cover the full outdoor kitchen island if possible with a fitted island cover. These are available from most outdoor kitchen retailers and protect surfaces, appliances, and storage from ice and debris.
  • Check the drainage around the base of the outdoor kitchen. Water that pools against the structure during winter accelerates stucco, mortar, and veneer deterioration. Clear any debris blocking drainage channels.

A well-built outdoor kitchen that’s properly maintained and winterized will look and perform like new year after year.
