Warranties are one of the most overlooked parts of an outdoor kitchen purchase in Oklahoma — and one of the most important. When something goes wrong with your outdoor kitchen two years after installation (and things do sometimes go wrong), your warranty is the difference between a covered repair and an out-of-pocket expense. At VistaScapes Design & Build, we believe homeowners should understand exactly what warranty coverage they have before they sign with any contractor.
Two Types of Warranties — Workmanship and Appliance
Outdoor kitchen warranties cover two separate categories:
- Workmanship warranty — the contractor’s warranty on their installation and construction quality. If a countertop cracks because of improper installation, if a masonry seam fails because of poor technique, or if a cabinet wasn’t properly secured and comes loose, the workmanship warranty covers the repair. This warranty is from the contractor, not the manufacturer.
- Appliance/product warranty — the manufacturer’s warranty on the appliances and materials themselves. If your grill’s igniter fails, if the refrigerator compressor dies, or if the stainless steel on a cabinet develops unusual corrosion, the product warranty covers it. This warranty is from the brand, not the contractor.
What to Look for in a Contractor’s Workmanship Warranty
Ask every contractor you’re considering: “What is your workmanship warranty, and what does it cover?” A quality outdoor kitchen contractor in Oklahoma should offer at minimum a one-year workmanship warranty; better contractors offer two to three years. The warranty should be in writing and should specifically address:
- Structural installation (masonry work, framing, footings)
- Appliance installation (proper leveling, connection, function)
- Countertop and cabinet installation
- Gas and electrical connections (though these may be covered by the licensed subcontractors’ separate warranties)
A contractor who won’t provide a workmanship warranty in writing is a contractor who doesn’t stand behind their work. Walk away.
Understanding Appliance Warranties for Oklahoma’s Climate
Outdoor kitchen appliance warranties vary dramatically by brand and component. For the Broken Arrow and Tulsa market:
- Summerset — offers lifetime warranty on stainless burners and components; 3-year warranty on other grill components; 1-year on refrigerators
- Blaze — lifetime warranty on burners and cooking grates; limited warranty on other components
- RCS — 5-year limited warranty on grills; 1-year on other appliances
Oklahoma’s climate — specifically the UV exposure, humidity, and temperature extremes — can affect how quickly some appliance components wear. Read warranty exclusions carefully; warranties that exclude “normal weathering” or “environmental exposure” may not cover the exactly the type of degradation Oklahoma’s climate causes.
What Voids Appliance Warranties
Common warranty killers for outdoor kitchen appliances in Oklahoma include: improper installation by an unlicensed or unqualified installer, using an indoor appliance outdoors (never do this — voids the warranty immediately), modifications to the appliance or its connections, and failure to use the appliance within its rated operating environment (e.g., using an appliance rated to 90°F ambient temperature in 110°F Oklahoma summer heat).
