A properly built masonry outdoor fireplace will last for decades — but like any masonry structure exposed to weather and fire, it benefits from a few regular maintenance practices. This guide from VistaScapes Design & Build covers the key maintenance tasks that keep Tulsa outdoor fireplaces operating safely and looking great year after year.
Annual Outdoor Fireplace Maintenance Checklist
Once a year — ideally in spring or fall — walk through this maintenance checklist for your outdoor fireplace:
- Inspect the spark arrestor cap: Remove any debris (leaves, twigs, bird nests) from the spark arrestor or rain cap. Check that the cap is still properly attached and not corroded. Replace if significantly rusted.
- Check mortar joints: Look for cracked or missing mortar between brick or stone units. Small cracks are normal and easily repointed. Large separations indicate structural movement and warrant professional evaluation.
- Check the firebox interior: Minor cracking in the firebox refractory is normal. Significant crumbling or large cracks in the firebox walls or floor should be repaired before heavy use.
- Clear ash and debris: Accumulated ash can hold moisture against the firebox floor. Clean ash out after every 4-6 uses in wet weather, or before extended storage periods.
- Seal the stone or brick surface: Masonry sealer protects stone, brick, and mortar from moisture absorption and freeze-thaw damage. Reapply every 2-3 years in Oklahoma’s climate.
- Check the hearth extension: Inspect the flagstone or concrete hearth for cracks or settling. Surface cracks in concrete hearths are cosmetic; structural movement in the base warrants attention.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a masonry professional if you notice: significant mortar joint failure across large areas, visible separation between the firebox and the surrounding structure, flue tiles that are cracked or broken, or any structural leaning or movement in the fireplace. Early intervention is always less expensive than deferred repair.
