Designing an outdoor kitchen island is one of the most exciting parts of planning an outdoor living space — and one of the most important to get right. The layout you choose affects how you cook, how your guests interact with the space, and how the kitchen flows with the rest of your patio. This guide from VistaScapes Design & Build walks through the most popular outdoor kitchen island layouts for Oklahoma homeowners. Call 918-779-1317 to start your design consultation.
Linear Outdoor Kitchen Layout
The linear layout is a single straight run of outdoor kitchen — grill, countertop, and components arranged in a line against a wall, fence, or at the edge of the patio. This is the most compact layout option, ideal for:
- Smaller patios (under 400 sq ft) where space is limited
- Homeowners who want a simple outdoor kitchen with one main grill and minimal additional components
- Properties where the kitchen needs to be tucked against a wall or fence
- First-time outdoor kitchen owners who want to start simple and potentially expand later
A typical linear layout runs 8–14 feet long and 2.5–3 feet deep. We recommend leaving at least 5 feet of clearance in front of the grill for safe operation and comfortable access.
L-Shape Outdoor Kitchen Layout
The L-shaped outdoor kitchen is the most popular layout we build in Broken Arrow and Tulsa. Two runs of kitchen connect at a 90-degree corner, creating more counter space and a natural gathering zone at the corner point.
- Cooking zone: Main run with the grill, side burner, and prep counter
- Bar/serving zone: The return leg of the L, often with a bar overhang where guests can sit on stools and talk to the chef
- Works well in corner patio settings where two walls of outdoor kitchen can anchor the space
- Creates a natural traffic flow that keeps guests at the bar overhang while keeping them out of the cooking zone
U-Shape Outdoor Kitchen Layout
The U-shape — or three-sided outdoor kitchen — provides the most counter space and the greatest number of appliance locations. This layout works best on larger patios (600+ sq ft) and for homeowners who cook frequently or host large groups regularly.
- The center run typically holds the primary grill and pizza oven
- The two side runs hold the refrigerator, sink, ice maker, and additional prep counter
- The open end of the U faces the patio or seating area for easy service
- Requires more footprint but creates a true outdoor cooking workspace comparable to a professional kitchen
Island with Bar Seating Layout
A freestanding outdoor kitchen island — with countertop on all sides and bar seating around the perimeter — creates an outdoor kitchen that feels more like a bar or restaurant than a traditional outdoor BBQ setup. This is the most social layout:
- Guests sit on all sides and interact with the person cooking
- Works well as the centerpiece of a large patio or outdoor entertainment area
- Requires proper utility access (gas and water) from below the island
- Often topped with a pergola or shade structure to complete the outdoor room
Design Tips for Oklahoma Outdoor Kitchens
- Face the grill away from prevailing winds — Oklahoma’s south and southwest winds should blow smoke away from your guests, not toward them
- Plan for drainage — The outdoor sink needs a drain line; design this into the base from the start
- Allow for shade — Orient the outdoor kitchen under a pergola or patio cover for comfortable use during Oklahoma summers
- Leave enough clearance — NFPA and grill manufacturers recommend 5 feet of clearance in front of all open-flame appliances
- Think about access — Leave enough door and drawer clearance in front of all access panels
