Starting an outdoor living project is exciting — but what happens before the first stone is laid or the first concrete is poured matters enormously. Proper yard preparation is the foundation of every successful outdoor living project. At VistaScapes Design & Build, we walk every client through the preparation process because homeowners who understand what’s happening and why make better decisions and end up with results they love. Here’s how to prepare your yard for an outdoor living project in Oklahoma.
Step 1: Call 811 Before Any Digging
This is not optional. Before any excavation begins, Oklahoma law requires calling 811 — the national “Call Before You Dig” service — to have underground utilities located and marked. Gas lines, water lines, electrical conduit, and telecommunication cables run through yards in locations that aren’t always obvious. A contractor who skips this step is taking a dangerous and illegal shortcut. VistaScapes coordinates 811 marking as a standard part of every project setup.
Step 2: Assess Existing Drainage
Walk your yard during or after a rainstorm and observe where water collects and how it flows. Poor drainage is the #1 cause of premature hardscape failure in Oklahoma. Any outdoor living project — patio, retaining wall, outdoor kitchen, fire pit — must account for drainage or water will find its way under, around, and through your new construction.
We look for low spots that collect water, areas where water runs toward the house foundation, and existing drain infrastructure. Sometimes we need to install French drains, channel drains, or regrade portions of the yard before construction begins. Addressing drainage first protects both your outdoor living investment and your home’s foundation.
Step 3: Establish Grade and Elevations
Oklahoma yards often have significant grade changes — slopes that create challenges for level patio construction. We measure existing grade and determine the finished elevation of your patio or hardscape surface relative to the home’s door threshold, the yard, and any existing structures. Getting this right at the start prevents the miserable situation of a finished patio that floods toward the house or that has awkward step transitions.
Step 4: Remove Obstacles
Before construction, we clear the work area of obstacles — existing patios or pavement that’s being replaced, overgrown landscaping, tree stumps, and debris. Existing concrete is broken up and hauled away. Tree roots in the project area are evaluated — sometimes they require removal or the design needs to route around them.
Step 5: Plan for Gas and Electrical Access
If your project includes an outdoor kitchen, gas fire pit, or outdoor lighting, gas and electrical infrastructure needs to be planned before hardscape is installed — not after. Running a gas line or electrical conduit under a finished patio requires cutting into new work. We coordinate with licensed plumbers and electricians during the planning phase so rough-in work happens before concrete or stone goes down.
