Choosing the right stone for your outdoor fireplace is one of the most important — and most personal — decisions in an outdoor living project. The stone you choose will define the look of your entire backyard for decades. Here’s what VistaScapes Design & Build has learned building natural stone fireplaces throughout Broken Arrow, Tulsa, and northeast Oklahoma.
Oklahoma Limestone
Oklahoma limestone is the most regionally authentic choice for outdoor fireplaces in northeast Oklahoma. It’s quarried locally, has a warm cream-to-tan color, and weathers beautifully over time. Oklahoma limestone is durable, widely available, and its natural variation gives each fireplace a unique character. This is our most commonly recommended stone for Broken Arrow and Tulsa homeowners who want a genuine Oklahoma look.
Oklahoma Sandstone
Oklahoma sandstone has a warmer, more reddish-brown tone than limestone. It’s a softer stone and generally less expensive, with a more rustic character. Great for a casual, earthy aesthetic. Important note: sandstone is more porous than limestone, so proper sealing and mortar selection matter more for long-term performance.
Tennessee Crab Orchard Stone
Crab orchard stone is a distinctive flat-laying sandstone with dramatic rust, brown, and tan stripes. It’s popular for a rustic-modern aesthetic and works beautifully as the primary stone on outdoor fireplaces. It’s shipped from Tennessee but widely used throughout northeast Oklahoma.
Texas Lueders Limestone
Lueders limestone from West Texas has a consistent cream-to-buff color and a clean, refined appearance. It’s excellent for homeowners who want the natural stone look but prefer a more uniform, less rustic aesthetic. Lueders is a premium option that pairs beautifully with modern farmhouse and transitional home styles.
Fieldstone / River Rock
Oklahoma fieldstone and river rock create a very rustic, naturalistic fireplace appearance. The rounded stones have a cottage or log-cabin aesthetic. They’re more labor-intensive to lay than cut stone, which affects the cost, but the finished look is unmistakably unique.
Thin Stone Veneer
For homeowners on a tighter budget who still want the look of natural stone, thin stone veneer (approximately 1–1.5 inches thick vs. 3–6 inches for full stone) can be applied over a CMU block fireplace structure. Thin veneer costs less in material and labor but still delivers a beautiful natural stone appearance.
