Outdoor kitchen layout is one of the most important decisions in the design process — more important than appliance selection or countertop material — because the layout determines how the space functions for every meal, every gathering, and every casual use for the lifetime of the kitchen. A well-designed layout makes cooking and entertaining effortless. A poorly designed layout creates friction that frustrates the experience every time you use it.
Start With How You Actually Cook and Entertain
Before considering any layout, we ask clients to walk through a typical outdoor cooking session: where do groceries come from? Where do guests stand while you cook? Where does cooked food go? Where do drinks live? Where does waste go? These practical workflow questions reveal layout needs that elevation drawings and floor plans don’t capture. A kitchen designed around your actual cooking patterns will be used more and enjoyed more than a kitchen designed to look good in photos.
The Three Core Outdoor Kitchen Layouts
Straight (Linear) Layout
The straight or linear layout runs all components along a single wall or island. It’s the simplest to design, works in the widest range of patio dimensions, and is the most cost-effective configuration because there’s only one island structure to build. It works well for grilling-focused kitchens where most cooking happens at the grill with minimal food prep or side cooking involved.
The limitation of the linear layout: counter space is limited compared to L or U configurations, and the workflow between grill, prep area, and serving area is more linear — harder to work in a small section of. For serious cooks who want space to prepare food, sauce, and plate simultaneously, linear is constraining. For casual grillers who cook burgers and steaks with minimal preparation, it’s perfectly adequate.
L-Shaped Layout
The L-shaped outdoor kitchen is our most commonly designed configuration in Broken Arrow and Tulsa. Two island sections connect at a corner, creating more counter space than a linear layout while fitting naturally against a house wall or in a corner of the patio. The L-shape allows the cook to face guests on the open side while working at the grill — the “working at the grill, talking to guests” position that makes outdoor kitchens social spaces rather than work areas.
One island leg typically contains the grill and primary cooking elements. The other leg contains prep space, refrigeration, sink, and bar seating. The corner itself often houses the ice maker or a kegerator for easy access from both working positions.
U-Shaped Layout
The U-shaped outdoor kitchen wraps on three sides, creating maximum counter space and the most efficient cooking workflow — everything is within reach without moving. It requires a larger patio footprint (minimum 12–14 feet in the open direction) and typically a larger budget, but it delivers the most functional outdoor kitchen experience for clients who cook seriously outdoors.
U-shaped layouts are best in freestanding configurations in the middle of a patio rather than pushed against a house wall, since the U creates a work zone that needs access from all sides. The enclosed cooking zone separates the cook’s workspace from the guest area elegantly — guests sit at the open end of the U while the cook works inside it.
Oklahoma-Specific Layout Considerations
In Oklahoma, the primary site consideration for outdoor kitchen layout is sun orientation. A kitchen positioned with its cooking surface in direct west-facing afternoon sun is unusable in summer — the heat from the sun combined with grill heat creates an impossible cooking environment. We orient kitchens to face north or east wherever the site allows, or ensure adequate shade coverage from a pergola or patio cover for any west-facing configuration.
Wind direction is a secondary consideration. Oklahoma’s prevailing winds are from the south and southwest. A kitchen positioned so that the prevailing wind blows smoke toward the seating area will cause problems. We account for wind in both appliance placement and the orientation of the overall kitchen relative to the patio’s guest areas.
