Broken Arrow Concrete Retaining Wall Contractor — Slopes, Terracing & Grade Changes
Many Broken Arrow properties have grade changes — slopes that limit usable yard space, erosion that damages landscaping, or uneven terrain that makes building a level patio difficult. A properly built retaining wall solves all of these problems: it creates level usable area, controls erosion, and adds structural definition to the landscape. VistaScapes builds retaining walls throughout Broken Arrow using concrete block, natural stone, and poured concrete.
When You Need a Retaining Wall
Signs that a retaining wall is the right solution for your Broken Arrow yard:
- Slope behind or beside a patio area: The slope erodes onto the patio, limits the patio size, or creates a visual barrier
- Erosion problems: Soil is washing away during rain events, exposing roots or undercutting structures
- Grade change between properties: Your yard is significantly higher or lower than a neighboring property
- Creating terraced levels: Converting a sloped backyard into multiple flat levels for different use zones
- Pool or patio installation on sloped lot: The grade must be managed to create a level surface
Retaining Wall Types
Segmental Block (Allan Block / Versa-Lok Style)
Interlocking concrete blocks with a battered (angled) face that provides stability. Good for walls up to 3–4 feet tall. Relatively affordable, DIY-friendly at smaller scale, but we install them properly with drainage aggregate behind and perforated pipe at the base. For taller walls, geogrid reinforcement extends through the fill for additional stability.
CMU Block with Stone or Stucco Veneer
A concrete masonry unit (CMU) structural wall, poured with concrete cores and rebar, faced with natural stone, manufactured stone veneer, or stucco. The CMU provides structural capacity for taller walls (4–8+ feet); the veneer provides the finished appearance. This is our most versatile retaining wall type — structural where needed, beautiful on the surface.
Natural Stone
Dry-stack or mortar-set natural stone walls are the most beautiful retaining solution for most settings. Oklahoma limestone, fieldstone, and river rock all make excellent retaining walls when properly built. Height is limited for dry-stack applications; mortar-set walls with proper footings and drainage can be taller. Premium cost, premium aesthetic result.
What Makes a Retaining Wall Last in Oklahoma
Oklahoma’s clay soils hold water, which is a retaining wall’s enemy. Hydrostatic pressure — water pressure behind the wall — is the leading cause of retaining wall failure. Proper construction prevents it:
- Drainage aggregate behind the wall: Crushed stone or gravel allows water to drain rather than build up pressure
- Perforated pipe at the base: Channels collected water away from the wall
- Weep holes: In solid walls, intermittent weep holes allow pressure to release
- Proper footing depth: Below the frost line prevents frost heaving from destabilizing the wall base
Combining Retaining Walls with Outdoor Living
Retaining walls frequently work in concert with outdoor living builds. A sloped Broken Arrow backyard might need retaining walls to create a level patio area — we design the wall and the patio as an integrated project. Retaining walls can also double as seating walls when topped at the right height (18–24 inches), or as privacy walls when built taller (5–6 feet), serving multiple functions in the outdoor space design.
