Broken Arrow Outdoor Stone Fireplace Builder — Natural Stone & Brick Masonry

An outdoor stone fireplace built from real natural stone and brick masonry is one of the most impressive features you can add to a Broken Arrow property. It is also one of the most technically demanding — requiring proper foundation work, correct smoke chamber geometry, quality flue systems, and the kind of masonry craftsmanship that is becoming genuinely rare in the Tulsa market. VistaScapes & Design is one of the few outdoor living contractors in northeastern Oklahoma that still builds true masonry outdoor fireplaces from the ground up.

What Makes a True Masonry Outdoor Fireplace

Walk through any Broken Arrow neighborhood and you will see a range of outdoor fireplaces — from $2,000 prefab stucco-covered kits to full natural stone masonry fireplaces that took skilled craftsmen two weeks to build. The difference is not just aesthetic — it is structural, functional, and financial.

The Foundation

Every outdoor fireplace we build starts with a properly engineered concrete footing. For a typical outdoor fireplace, this means a concrete slab foundation at least 12 inches thick, often larger depending on the fireplace size, reinforced with steel rebar, and poured below the frost line to prevent seasonal heaving. This foundation is why our fireplaces do not shift, lean, or crack over time — the ground beneath them moves with freeze-thaw cycles, but the footing prevents that movement from transmitting to the structure above.

The Firebox

The firebox is the heart of the fireplace. We build fireboxes from firebrick — a specialized refractory brick designed to withstand the intense heat of repeated fires — set in refractory mortar. The firebox dimensions are designed following established proportions for proper draft and combustion efficiency. A firebox built from standard brick and mortar will begin to fail within a few years under regular use.

The Smoke Chamber and Throat

The smoke chamber is the angled transition zone between the firebox and the flue — this is where most amateur fireplace builds fail. A properly designed smoke chamber has correct angle, correct corbelling, and a properly sized throat damper. An improperly designed smoke chamber causes smoking, poor draft, and is a fire hazard. We build smoke chambers to correct proportions every time.

The Flue

For wood-burning outdoor fireplaces, we install clay flue tile liners of the correct size for the firebox opening. On wood-burning units in Broken Arrow, we install a stainless steel spark arrestor at the top of the flue to prevent burning debris from leaving the chimney — this is both a code requirement and a practical fire prevention measure in Oklahoma’s dry spring and fall seasons.

The Exterior Masonry

This is the part homeowners see and photograph — and it is where our craftsmanship shows most clearly. We work with:

  • Oklahoma native stone: Choteau limestone, sandstone, and field stone quarried locally — regional character at its best
  • Arkansas fieldstone and river rock: Beautiful rounded stones with organic, naturalistic character
  • Brick: Classic and timeless, available in a wide range of colors and textures
  • Flagstone veneer: Flat-cut stone applied to the firebox face and surround for a contemporary natural look
  • Mixed materials: Stone base with brick detailing, or brick structure with stone arch — endless design flexibility

Mantel and Hearth Design

An outdoor stone fireplace becomes a complete architectural feature with the addition of a mantel and hearth:

  • Stone mantel: A hand-hewn limestone slab or a corbelled stone shelf creates a natural resting place for decor and provides visual termination to the firebox opening
  • Timber beam mantel: Reclaimed oak or cedar beam mantels are extremely popular in Broken Arrow — the combination of rough timber and stone masonry creates a warm, rustic character that fits Oklahoma’s landscape beautifully
  • Flagstone hearth: A flagstone hearth extending in front of the firebox protects the patio surface from spark damage and defines the zone around the fireplace

Gas Conversion and Dual-Fuel Options

Many homeowners start with a wood-burning outdoor fireplace and later want the convenience of gas. We can install a gas log lighter in a wood-burning firebox to make fire-starting easier, or design the fireplace from the beginning for full gas operation with vented gas log inserts that allow a realistic flame without wood management.
