Broken Arrow Masonry Contractor — Stone, Brick, and Block Work
True masonry — building with stone, brick, and concrete block laid by hand in mortar — is one of the oldest and most durable construction methods in human history. It is also one of the rarest skills in the modern Tulsa metro construction market. At VistaScapes & Design, masonry is at the core of what we do. We build with natural stone and brick because we believe it is the right material for Oklahoma’s demanding climate — and because the results are unmistakably beautiful compared to kit systems and manufactured alternatives.
Masonry Services We Provide in Broken Arrow
Outdoor Fireplaces
Our outdoor fireplaces are built from the ground up — footing, firebox in refractory firebrick, smoke chamber, clay flue tile, and natural stone or brick exterior. We do not use foam block firebox kits. Every fireplace we build can burn a real wood fire for 30+ years without structural failure.
Retaining Walls
Retaining walls fail when they are not engineered for the load they carry and the soil conditions behind them. We build natural stone retaining walls with proper batter (backward lean into the hillside), adequate depth of foundation, and integrated drainage to prevent hydrostatic pressure from building up and pushing the wall over. For walls over 4 feet, we use concrete block with engineered deadmen anchors.
Seating Walls
Decorative seating walls define patio spaces, reduce the need for portable chairs, and create natural gathering spots. We build seating walls from natural stone, brick, or CMU block with stone caps — at the correct height (17-19 inches) for comfortable adult seating.
Outdoor Kitchen Masonry Bases
The foundation of a lasting outdoor kitchen is a masonry base — concrete block or steel-framed concrete board construction that does not rot, rust through, or warp like a wood-framed base. We build all our outdoor kitchen bases from masonry, which is why our kitchens outlast kit systems by decades.
Stone Veneer and Facing
Many clients want the look of natural stone on a structure that is primarily concrete block or poured concrete. We apply natural stone veneer to exterior walls, fireplace faces, planters, columns, and other surfaces — creating the look of full stone construction at a more accessible cost.
Brick Work
We lay brick for patios, steps, fireplace faces, column bases, accent bands, and other architectural applications. Brick work requires careful planning for bond patterns, mortar joint consistency, and weather exposure — we execute all of it properly.
Concrete Block (CMU) Work
Concrete masonry unit (CMU) block is the workhorse of masonry construction — structural, durable, and versatile. We build CMU retaining walls, garden walls, outdoor kitchen frames, and structural components that will not fail under Oklahoma’s conditions.
What Separates Real Masonry From Kit Systems
The outdoor living market is flooded with products that look like masonry but are not: foam block fireplaces with thin stone veneer adhered to them, manufactured stone pressed from concrete molds and installed over foam board, and prefab outdoor kitchen frames of galvanized steel and cement board. These products have a place in the market — and we do not dismiss them entirely. But they are not the same as real masonry, and they do not last the same amount of time in Oklahoma’s conditions.
Real masonry:
- Uses actual stone, brick, or concrete block set in properly mixed mortar
- Requires a concrete footing sized for the load
- Is built by craftsmen who understand masonry bond, mortar consistency, drainage, and structural principles
- Lasts 30-100+ years with minimal maintenance when properly constructed
Masonry for Broken Arrow’s Climate
Natural stone and brick masonry are particularly well-suited to Oklahoma because:
- High thermal mass resists the dramatic temperature swings of the Oklahoma climate
- Properly mortared stone and brick are not vulnerable to freeze-thaw damage the way porous materials are
- Masonry structures do not blow away — they withstand the Oklahoma wind events that destroy lighter structures
- Natural stone is UV-stable — it does not fade, chalk, or degrade in Oklahoma’s intense summer sun
