Top Tips for Oklahoma Outdoor Living Projects
Tip 1: Plan for Oklahoma Summer Heat
Oklahoma summers are brutal — 100°F+ heat, intense UV, and high humidity in June and July. Any outdoor living space that doesn’t incorporate shade will be unusable for 3–4 months of the year. Plan a pergola, covered structure, or at minimum an overhead shade element as part of your outdoor living design from the start. Adding shade after the patio is poured costs more and often looks like an afterthought.
Tip 2: Oklahoma Clay Soil Demands Proper Base Preparation
Oklahoma’s expansive clay soil is the enemy of any poured concrete surface. When wet, clay expands. When dry, it shrinks. This movement is what cracks concrete patios, settles pavers, and destabilizes retaining walls. The solution is proper excavation depth, compacted gravel base, and correct reinforcement — not skimping on any of these steps. Always ask your contractor specifically about base preparation before signing a contract.
Tip 3: Build Fire Features on Concrete — Never on Wood
This seems obvious but it’s worth stating: no fire feature — fire pit, outdoor fireplace, outdoor grill — should be built on a wood deck. Always build fire features on a concrete, stone, or masonry surface. We see fire-damaged decks in Tulsa and Broken Arrow more often than you’d think.
Tip 4: The Fall Season Is Oklahoma’s Best Outdoor Living Season
Oklahoma’s September–November weather is spectacular for outdoor living — mild temperatures, low humidity, beautiful foliage. Plan your outdoor space to maximize fall use. A fire feature makes fall evenings magical. A covered structure extends the season into early winter. Design for fall, and you’ll get the most use out of your investment.
Tip 5: Get Multiple Written Estimates — And Compare Them Carefully
Price differences between contractors often reflect material quality, base preparation depth, reinforcement practices, and crew experience — not arbitrary markup. The lowest bid is often low because something important was left out. Compare line-item estimates, not just total price.
Tip 6: Permit Your Work
Permitted outdoor living structures in Broken Arrow and Tulsa add documented value to your home. Unpermitted structures can be liabilities at resale — buyers’ inspectors often flag them and sellers get requests to remove or retroactively permit. Do it right the first time.
