Outdoor Fireplace Materials We Build With in Broken Arrow

Natural Stone Fireplaces

Natural stone outdoor fireplaces are VistaScapes’ most-requested product in Broken Arrow. The look is organic, timeless, and completely unique — no two stone fireplaces are identical.

  • Oklahoma limestone: Warm, regional character — buff to tan tones that complement Oklahoma’s earth tones
  • Fieldstone: Rounded river rock and quarried rubble for a rustic, natural appearance
  • Ledgestone: Thin linear courses for a clean, contemporary stone look
  • Flagstone surround: Flat-face stone with tight joints for a refined finish
  • Veneer stone: Manufactured stone veneer (Eldorado, Cultured Stone) for consistent color in a range of profiles

Brick Outdoor Fireplaces

Traditional brick outdoor fireplaces remain a Broken Arrow classic. The precision of brick masonry creates clean lines and enduring character.

  • Traditional red brick — classic American look
  • Antique or tumbled brick — aged, weathered appearance
  • Iron spot buff — warm, neutral tones that complement tan and brown homes
  • Multi-colored or range brick — blended for organic variation
  • Custom bond patterns — running bond, Flemish bond, stacked for modern look

Combination Stone and Brick

Many of our best-looking Broken Arrow fireplaces combine materials — natural stone on the main body, brick for the firebox surround and columns, or stone veneer on the chimney above the mantel level. VistaScapes designs combinations that create depth and visual interest.

How We Build Outdoor Fireplaces in Broken Arrow

Every VistaScapes outdoor fireplace is built on a solid structural foundation:

Step 1: Engineered Footing

Oklahoma clay soil requires a properly sized and reinforced concrete footing. We calculate footing size based on the total weight of the fireplace structure — typically 12–18 inches deep, wider than the fireplace base, with rebar reinforcement.

Step 2: CMU Structural Core

The fireplace shell is built from concrete masonry units (CMU / cinderblock), which provides the structural strength to support the weight of stone or brick above. The firebox, smoke shelf, and smoke chamber are all formed in CMU before veneer is applied.

Step 3: Firebox Proportioning

The firebox opening dimensions, depth, and throat size are engineered to specific ratios that ensure proper draft. An incorrectly proportioned firebox smokes back — we’ve seen enough “fixed” fireplaces to know this step cannot be shortcut.

Step 4: Smoke Chamber and Flu Liner

The smoke chamber is formed above the firebox throat and pargeted smooth for proper aerodynamics. Clay flu tiles are installed in the chimney shaft, properly lapped and mortared, to safely channel combustion gases to the top.

Step 5: Spark Arrestor Cap

A galvanized or stainless steel spark arrestor cap is installed at the chimney top — keeping embers in, rain and birds out.

Step 6: Stone or Brick Veneer

With the structure complete, we apply the decorative stone or brick finish, laid in bond pattern with tooled joints. For natural stone, this involves selecting, fitting, and mortaring individual pieces for both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.

Outdoor Fireplace Add-Ons in Broken Arrow

  • Integrated mantel — cedar, limestone slab, or formed concrete
  • Hearth extension — stone or brick apron in front of firebox
  • Flanking seat walls for built-in seating
  • Firewood storage alcove built into the fireplace base
  • TV mounting provisions above the firebox
  • Outdoor kitchen counter on one or both sides

Wood-Burning vs. Gas Outdoor Fireplace in Broken Arrow

Both options have devoted fans. Here’s how they compare:

  • Wood-burning: Authentic crackling fire, wood smoke aroma, no gas line required — but needs firewood storage, ash cleanup, and proper dry wood
  • Gas: Push-button convenience, instant on/off, no ash, no wood storage — but requires gas line installation and lacks the crackling wood fire experience
  • Gas-conversion-ready: We can build a wood-burning firebox with a gas line rough-in, allowing easy conversion to gas in the future
