We build grill island frames in welded steel stud or CMU (concrete masonry unit) block depending on the size and configuration. Steel stud framing is lightweight and allows flexible shaping; CMU block is heavier but extremely durable and provides a solid substrate for stone veneer. Both are correct approaches when done properly with appropriate weather barriers and fasteners.
The Countertop
Countertop material is one of the most important decisions in an outdoor kitchen. Concrete countertops are a top choice — they can be poured in virtually any color and profile, are non-porous when properly sealed, and handle heat from adjacent grills well. Natural stone slabs (granite, quartzite) are durable and beautiful. Tile countertops are economical but require maintenance on the grout joints. We provide samples and discuss durability vs. cost tradeoffs for each option.
The Finish
