What to Expect During Outdoor Living Construction in Broken Arrow OK

Most homeowners have never been through an outdoor living construction project before. Knowing what to expect — day by day and week by week — makes the process far less stressful and helps you feel confident that things are progressing correctly. Here’s a realistic picture of what VistaScapes projects look like from start to finish in Broken Arrow.

Before Construction Starts

Utility locates: Call 811 (Oklahoma’s free utility locate service) at least 2–3 business days before any excavation. This marks underground utilities so we don’t hit gas lines, water lines, or electrical conduit during digging. We remind you of this in the pre-construction communication, and we verify the locates are marked before excavating.

Material delivery: Concrete forms, rebar, gravel, and lumber are typically delivered 1–2 days before we start. If you have a gate or access constraint, tell us early — sometimes delivery vehicles are large and need specific access routes.

Backyard prep: Move outdoor furniture, grills, and portable items out of the work zone. Secure pets. If we’re building near existing landscaping or irrigation, flag anything that needs to be preserved.

Week 1 — Site Prep and Concrete

Day 1–2: Staking the layout, excavation to proper depth (6–8 inches for patio), gravel base compaction, and form setting. The backyard will look torn up — this is normal and expected.

Day 2–3: Reinforcement (rebar or fiber mesh), final grade check, concrete pour. Concrete trucks are loud and the pour itself takes 2–4 hours for a typical patio. Once poured, the slab is finished and covered for curing.

Days 4–7: Concrete curing. The slab is roped off — no traffic on new concrete for at least 48–72 hours, full cure at 28 days. During this period, pergola footing excavation and preparation can proceed simultaneously.

Week 1–2 — Pergola and Masonry

Pergola footings are dug and poured. After curing (48–72 hours), post bases are set and posts are installed. Beams go up. Rafters follow. A typical pergola framing takes 2–3 days once footings are cured.

If the project includes stone work — fireplace, seating walls, stone veneer — masonry typically begins once the concrete base is cured enough to work on. Stone fireplaces take 4–10 days of masonry work depending on size and complexity.

Final Days — Finishing Touches

Electrical connections for lighting and fans, sealing the concrete surface, installing lighting fixtures and fans, final cleanup and debris removal, and a walkthrough inspection with you to confirm everything meets your expectations.
