Pool Patio Contractor in Broken Arrow OK
The patio around your pool is as important as the pool itself. It’s where towels get dropped, kids run between swims, and adults spend summer afternoons. A poor pool patio — slippery when wet, unbearably hot in July, faded and stained within a few years — makes the pool less enjoyable. A well-built pool patio designed for Oklahoma’s climate makes the entire pool area work better and look better for years. VistaScapes builds pool patios and surrounds throughout Broken Arrow.
Pool Patio Material Options
Travertine Pavers
Travertine is the premium material for pool surrounds and one of our most recommended options for Broken Arrow pools. Natural travertine stays significantly cooler than concrete or brick in Oklahoma’s summer sun — its porous surface doesn’t absorb and radiate heat the way dense materials do. Travertine’s textured surface is also naturally slip-resistant when wet. Available in cream, walnut, ivory, and noce (dark brown) finishes.
Travertine requires periodic sealing to prevent staining from pool chemicals and tanning oils, and installation on a proper sand-set base allows individual pieces to be lifted and reset if settling occurs.
Concrete Pavers (Cool Deck Style)
Concrete pavers with a tumbled or textured finish stay cooler than flat smooth concrete and provide excellent slip resistance. We use light-colored pavers — cream, light tan, or light gray — for pool surrounds, as lighter colors reflect rather than absorb summer heat. Many concrete paver products now incorporate reflective coatings specifically for pool applications.
Stamped Concrete with Cool Deck Coating
Stamped concrete pool decks are popular for their seamless appearance and design flexibility. We apply cool deck coatings (Kool Deck or equivalent) over stamped or broom-finish concrete specifically to reduce surface temperature — these coatings can reduce surface temps by 20-30°F compared to standard concrete. Slip-resistant finish is applied as part of the coating process.
Natural Flagstone
Oklahoma flagstone or imported limestone creates a beautiful natural pool surround that’s completely unique. Irregular flagstone laid on a sand-set bed has the character and warmth of natural stone. Flagstone surfaces stay relatively cool compared to concrete but do require attention to jointing — joints between stones need to stay tight to prevent tripping hazards and weed intrusion.
Pool Patio Design Considerations in Broken Arrow
Pool patios require attention to several factors beyond appearance:
- Drainage: Pool patio surfaces must drain away from the pool water to prevent returning dirty surface water to the pool. Proper slope (1/4 inch per foot) is critical.
- Slip resistance: Any surface around water needs to pass wet slip testing standards. We use materials and finishes specifically rated for wet pool environments.
- Heat retention: Oklahoma July temperatures push 100°F+ — concrete that gets to 150°F surface temperature is unusable. Material and color selection dramatically affects usability in summer.
- Chemical resistance: Pool chemicals (chlorine, pH treatments) degrade some materials and sealers. We use materials that hold up to pool chemical exposure.
- Coping interface: The edge where the patio meets the pool coping requires attention to waterproofing and movement joints — where two materials meet is often where water infiltration problems develop.
