Custom Concrete Countertops for Outdoor Kitchens in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
When homeowners want something truly custom for their outdoor kitchen — a shape, color, or design that no prefabricated countertop material can deliver — concrete is the answer. Custom poured concrete countertops can be made in any shape, any color, with any edge profile, and with features like integrated drainage, embedded aggregates, and custom sizing that commercial stone materials can’t match. VistaScapes offers custom concrete countertop fabrication as part of our outdoor kitchen installations throughout Broken Arrow and the Tulsa metro.
Why Choose Concrete Countertops for an Outdoor Kitchen?
True Customization
Granite and quartzite slabs come in fixed sizes and natural patterns that are beyond your control. Porcelain tile has limited color and texture options per product line. Concrete countertops are literally made to order — your dimensions, your color, your aggregate selection, your edge profile. If you want a curving countertop that wraps around a curved structure, embedded pieces of sea glass, a leathered surface texture, or a specific color that matches your outdoor tiles exactly, concrete can deliver it.
Heat Resistance
Outdoor kitchen countertops face heat that would destroy certain indoor countertop materials. Concrete is completely heat-resistant — you can set a 500°F cast iron pan directly on a sealed concrete countertop without damage. This makes it one of the most practical countertop materials for surfaces adjacent to grills, smokers, and pizza ovens.
Durability in Oklahoma’s Climate
Properly sealed and maintained concrete countertops handle Broken Arrow’s climate well — freeze-thaw cycling, temperature extremes, and UV exposure. The key is proper sealing with an outdoor-rated sealer applied at fabrication and maintained according to the schedule we recommend. Unsealed or improperly sealed concrete is porous and will stain and weather — sealed concrete is protected and attractive for years.
The Concrete Countertop Process
1. Template and Design
After the outdoor kitchen structure is complete, we template the exact countertop dimensions, cutout locations (grill, sink, side burner), and edge profile. Concrete countertops cannot be adjusted after casting — precision at this stage determines the fit.
2. Form Building
Forms are built from melamine-coated board to the exact countertop shape. Knockout forms create openings for grill, sink, and other appliances. Edge profiles are formed with flexible foam or wood strips.
3. Color and Aggregate Selection
Integral pigments are mixed into the concrete to achieve the desired base color. Decorative aggregates — glass chips, stone, shell, exposed natural aggregate — can be seeded into the surface for visual texture. We provide sample tiles during the design phase so you can see the color and aggregate combination before commitment.
4. Pouring and Curing
Concrete is poured into forms, consolidated, and left to cure for a minimum of 28 days. Initial demolding happens at 3–5 days; full strength develops over 28 days. During this time, the piece is kept moist to prevent shrinkage cracking.
5. Grinding and Polishing
After demolding and initial cure, the surface is ground and polished to the desired finish — matte, satin, or high-polish. Grinding exposes the aggregate below the surface skin for a consistent, beautiful texture. Polishing removes grinding scratches and brings the surface to the final smoothness level.
6. Sealing
Two to three coats of food-safe outdoor-rated sealer are applied and buffed between coats. The sealer protects against staining, moisture infiltration, and UV degradation. We recommend resealing every 1–3 years depending on use intensity and environmental exposure.
Concrete vs. Natural Stone for Outdoor Kitchen Countertops
Both are excellent choices. The right answer depends on priorities:
- Choose concrete if: customization is the priority, you want a specific shape or color, you want integrated features (drainage grooves, embedded elements), or you prefer a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted aesthetic
- Choose natural stone if: you want the specific beauty of a particular stone slab, you want a faster installation timeline, or you prefer a material with no maintenance sealing requirement (certain stone types)
