Many Broken Arrow homeowners in their 60s, 70s, and beyond want to continue using and enjoying their outdoor space — but their needs from that space have changed. Steep grade changes, slippery surfaces, heavy furniture, and poor shade all become bigger problems with age. VistaScapes designs outdoor living spaces that work long-term, regardless of mobility changes.
The Priorities for Age-in-Place Outdoor Living
When we design for senior homeowners or multi-generational households, these are the elements we pay particular attention to:
No-Step or Low-Step Entry
Most homes have a step or two down to the backyard patio. For many seniors, this is the biggest barrier to daily use of outdoor space. We grade and pour concrete to eliminate step transitions where grade allows, or construct ramped approaches where full elimination isn’t possible.
Slip-Resistant Surfaces
Smooth stamped concrete is beautiful — but when wet, it can be treacherous. We select surface finishes based on how the space will be used. Brushed broom finishes, exposed aggregate, and pavers with a textured face all provide significantly better traction than polished or sealed smooth surfaces.
Wide, Unobstructed Pathways
Standard pathways are 36 inches wide. For wheelchair and walker clearance, 48–60 inches is the better target. We design patios and walkways with enough width to allow comfortable movement without navigating around furniture or planters.
Shade — Oklahoma Summers Demand It
Heat exposure is a genuine health concern for seniors. A covered patio or pergola with a solid or louvered roof dramatically reduces heat load and keeps the space usable during Broken Arrow’s 95–105°F summer months. Ceiling fans on covered structures further improve comfort.
Built-In Seating and Low-Maintenance Features
Heavy patio furniture that needs to be moved, covered, and stored seasonally becomes more burdensome with age. Built-in concrete or stone seating, fixed planters, and perennial landscaping reduce the ongoing maintenance burden significantly.
Lighting for Evening Safety
Path lighting, step lighting, and ambient pergola lighting all improve safety for evening use. We integrate low-voltage landscape lighting into most projects as a standard recommendation.
Multi-Generational Spaces
Many of our most satisfying projects serve multiple generations simultaneously — grandchildren playing on the patio, parents grilling at the outdoor kitchen, grandparents seated comfortably in the covered area. Designing for all of these users at once just requires thinking through the layout carefully from the start.
