Grill selection is the single most important appliance decision in an outdoor kitchen. The grill is what you use every time you cook — it drives the island’s size, anchors the cooking zone, and determines how the outdoor kitchen performs for the next 15+ years. This guide covers the brands we actually install in Broken Arrow and Tulsa outdoor kitchens and what makes each one appropriate for different Oklahoma homeowners.
Built-In vs. Drop-In vs. Freestanding Grills
Outdoor kitchen grills are not the same as freestanding grills. A proper outdoor kitchen grill is designed for built-in installation — it has finished side panels that sit against the island cutout cleanly, a proper flue for heat management when enclosed in a cabinet structure, and stainless interior construction rated for permanent installation. Consumer grills (Weber, Broil King, Char-Griller) are not designed for built-in use and create heat management problems when installed in a masonry enclosure.
Brands We Install
Blaze Grills
Blaze is our most-recommended brand for Broken Arrow and Tulsa outdoor kitchens — an excellent balance of quality, features, and value. The Blaze LTE series (32″, 36″, 40″) features 304 stainless construction throughout (not just the exterior), dual-tube burners, a flame thrower ignition system, and a lifetime warranty on the burners and cooking grates. The 36″ LTE is our most common installation — adequate capacity for serious entertaining without requiring an island wider than a typical outdoor kitchen footprint.
Blaze grills range from $1,400–$3,200 depending on size and series. The LTE series hits the sweet spot for Oklahoma homeowners who want a quality grill without paying the premium price of a higher-end brand.
Coyote Grills
Coyote offers strong value in the entry-to-mid-range outdoor kitchen grill category — well-built stainless grills at price points that make the total project budget work for homeowners earlier in their outdoor kitchen investment. The Coyote S-series and C-series are legitimate outdoor kitchen grills, not rebranded consumer products. The 34″ and 36″ sizes are the most commonly installed. Prices run $800–$1,600 depending on configuration.
Coyote is a strong choice for homeowners who want to allocate budget toward other kitchen features (pizza oven, refrigerator, premium countertops) and don’t need the premium features of higher-tier brands.
Summerset Grills
Summerset sits between Coyote and Blaze in pricing and competes well at its price point. The Summerset Alturi and TRL series are solid performers — good BTU output, consistent temperature distribution, reliable ignition in Oklahoma wind conditions. The Alturi 36″ is a popular choice for homeowners who want Blaze-comparable quality at a slightly lower price point. Summerset also manufactures good value built-in side burners and warming drawers that pair with their grills.
Lynx and DCS (Premium Tier)
For Broken Arrow and Tulsa homeowners investing in premium outdoor kitchen systems ($80,000+), Lynx and DCS represent the top tier. Lynx’s ceramic briquette system and hand-forged stainless grates deliver restaurant-quality heat control. DCS’s 100% natural gas Grillworks system maintains consistent temperature across the full cooking surface. These are the right choice for outdoor kitchens where the cooking quality is as important as the aesthetics — homeowners who genuinely use the outdoor kitchen as their primary grilling and entertaining platform 10–11 months per year. Prices: $3,500–$7,000+.
Gas vs. Charcoal in an Outdoor Kitchen
Built-in outdoor kitchens are almost exclusively gas — natural gas where the meter is accessible, propane where natural gas isn’t available. Charcoal grills require ash management and don’t translate well to the built-in format. The rare exception: some Broken Arrow homeowners add a separate charcoal kamado (Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe) on a custom cart or in a specialized island cutout alongside a gas grill. This gives the flexibility of both fuel types without compromising either.
Natural gas is strongly preferred over propane for built-in outdoor kitchens — lower cost per BTU, no tank management, unlimited fuel. If your home has natural gas service, run a dedicated line to the outdoor kitchen. It’s one of the best investments you can make in the project’s long-term usability.
