Brick Outdoor Fireplace in Broken Arrow — Classic Construction Done Right

There’s a reason brick outdoor fireplaces have been built for centuries: the material is beautiful, durable, and handles fire exactly the way it was designed to. A properly built brick outdoor fireplace in Broken Arrow is one of the most satisfying investments you can make in your property — classic in appearance, functional for decades, and a feature that genuinely improves how you use your backyard. Here’s what goes into building one correctly.

The Anatomy of a Properly Built Brick Outdoor Fireplace

Foundation

A masonry fireplace is one of the heaviest structures on a residential property. Ours begin with a reinforced concrete footing, sized appropriately for the fireplace dimensions and local soil conditions. In Broken Arrow’s clay-heavy soils, adequate footing depth (below the frost line, minimum 18 inches) prevents settling and cracking over time.

Structural Core

The structural core is CMU (concrete masonry unit) block or solid brick, built plumb and level with type S mortar. The core carries the load of the entire structure — including the chimney — and must be built with precision to prevent settling or racking over time.

Firebox

The firebox is where fire happens — and it requires different materials than the rest of the fireplace. We build fireboxes with:

  • Firebrick: Dense, heat-resistant refractory brick rated for direct flame contact and temperature cycling up to 2,000°F
  • Refractory mortar: Specially formulated mortar that doesn’t crack with thermal cycling; standard mortar fails quickly under firebox conditions
  • Correct firebox geometry: The width, depth, and height ratio of the firebox affects draft; we follow proven ratios developed over centuries of fireplace construction

Smoke Chamber and Smoke Shelf

Above the firebox, the smoke chamber narrows toward the flue. A properly formed smoke chamber — with the correct taper and a smoke shelf that prevents downdrafts — is what makes a fireplace draw properly. This is where many cheap fireplaces fail: improperly shaped smoke chambers cause back-drafting, where smoke comes into the seating area instead of going up the chimney.

Flue Liner

Vitrified clay flue tile liner runs from the smoke chamber to the top of the chimney. Clay tile resists the acid condensation and heat of real wood burning. Without a liner, the interior masonry degrades rapidly. Every VistaScapes fireplace includes proper clay flue tile liner sized to the firebox opening.

Exterior Brick Veneer

The exterior brick is the face of the fireplace — what everyone sees. We offer a wide selection of brick colors and textures to match your home and personal aesthetic. Proper installation includes:

  • Correct mortar joint width for the brick type
  • Proper bonding pattern (running bond, stack bond, Flemish bond, etc.)
  • Sealed or tooled joints to resist water infiltration
  • Appropriate expansion joints where the veneer meets other materials

Chimney Cap and Spark Arrestor

A stainless steel spark arrestor cap that fits properly over the flue tile keeps water, debris, and animals out of the flue. Water is the biggest enemy of masonry chimneys — it leads to freeze-thaw damage, spalled brick, and deteriorated mortar joints over time. A proper cap is not optional.

Brick Color and Style Options

The appearance of your fireplace is defined by your brick choice. We work with you on:

  • Color: Traditional red, buff, tan, gray, charcoal, or multicolor blends
  • Texture: Smooth, wire-cut, tumbled, or handmade-look surfaces
  • Size: Standard modular, Roman, or oversized brick formats
  • Mortar color: Mortar color dramatically affects the overall appearance — we match or contrast as desired
