Broken Arrow Masonry Contractor — Stone, Brick & Concrete Construction
Masonry is one of the oldest and most enduring building trades — and in outdoor construction, it’s the one that separates temporary improvements from permanent features. A masonry fireplace, a stone retaining wall, or a reinforced concrete patio isn’t just a landscape element — it’s a structural feature built from the ground up to last as long as the house it’s built beside.
VistaScapes & Design is Broken Arrow’s specialty masonry and outdoor living contractor. We build outdoor fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, decorative concrete patios, stone walls, and hardscape features throughout Broken Arrow and the Tulsa metro. Here’s what we do and how we approach the work.
Outdoor Fireplace Construction
An outdoor fireplace is the most technically demanding masonry project in residential outdoor living. It requires a properly sized concrete footing, a firebox built to correct geometric proportions for draft performance, refractory materials in the firebox, a properly constructed smoke chamber above the firebox, correctly sized clay flue tiles, a concrete chimney crown, and a spark arrestor cap.
Every one of these elements matters. A firebox built with incorrect proportions will smoke into your patio. A footing inadequate for Oklahoma clay will allow the structure to settle and crack. Flue tiles installed without proper joint sealing will allow moisture infiltration that causes long-term damage. We build outdoor fireplaces correctly because we understand masonry — not because we looked up a YouTube tutorial.
Outdoor Kitchen Masonry
Outdoor kitchen structures are built from concrete masonry units (CMU block) — the same concrete block used in commercial construction. We form the shape of the kitchen structure, set the block with mortar, and then apply the finish material of your choice: natural stone veneer, manufactured stone, brick, or stucco. The CMU block core is dimensionally stable, fireproof, and provides a solid base for countertops, appliances, and the finish materials.
The result is an outdoor kitchen that isn’t going anywhere. Unlike wood-framed outdoor kitchens (which exist and are significantly less durable), a CMU-core outdoor kitchen structure won’t rot, won’t rack in high wind, and won’t deteriorate from the heat generated by the built-in grill.
Decorative & Structural Concrete
Concrete work is masonry work — it requires understanding of mix design, reinforcement, base preparation, jointing, and curing. We pour stamped concrete, exposed aggregate concrete, and broom-finished concrete throughout Broken Arrow with the base preparation Oklahoma’s clay soil demands: excavated clay, compacted aggregate base, rebar on proper chairs, and control joints that manage seasonal movement.
Stone and Brick Walls
Retaining walls, garden walls, and decorative stone features require the same masonry fundamentals as any structural work: proper base preparation, adequate wall thickness for the height and retained soil load, drainage behind the wall to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup, and cap installation to protect the wall core from water infiltration.
Stone retaining walls built without drainage backup fail — the soil pressure from water-saturated clay pushes them over. We build walls to hold up through Oklahoma’s seasonal moisture cycles.
Fire Pits
Masonry fire pits — whether round, square, or custom-shaped — are built from the same materials as a fireplace but simpler in structure. We typically build fire pits from a CMU block or natural stone structure with a gravel and firebrick floor, designed to hold wood fires safely. Gas fire pit inserts can be integrated for clients who prefer gas over wood burning.
Why Masonry Specialty Matters
General contractors can build a lot of things. A specialty masonry contractor builds masonry specifically — every week, every project, in the same material working conditions, dealing with the same soil challenges. That repetition produces better work, better problem recognition, and better outcomes for the homeowner.
When a masonry project in Broken Arrow is built by someone who does this every day, it shows in the quality of the mortar joints, the precision of the coursing, the performance of the fireplace draft, and the longevity of the concrete. That’s what VistaScapes delivers.
