Broken Arrow Outdoor Living Fall Preparation: Winterizing Your Outdoor Space
October arrives in Broken Arrow and the outdoor living season starts winding down — but the work isn’t quite done. A few hours of fall preparation protects your outdoor living investment from Oklahoma’s winter: freeze-thaw cycles, ice storms, and the occasional temperature drop to single digits. Take care of this now and your spring startup will be easy. Ignore it and you may find problems in March that are significantly worse than what fall attention would have prevented.
If fall inspection reveals repairs needed, call VistaScapes & Design at (918) 779-1317 — fall is actually a great time for outdoor living repairs and additions.
Concrete and Patio Surfaces
- Seal concrete countertops — outdoor concrete countertops should be resealed every 1-2 years; fall is the ideal time before freeze-thaw cycles stress unsealed concrete
- Fill control joint sealant — if control joints have open or deteriorated sealant, refill before water infiltrates and freezes inside the joint
- Clean and inspect for new cracks — address cracks wider than 1/4 inch before winter; water in unsealed cracks freezes and expands, widening the crack further each cycle
- Clear drainage channels — ensure surface drainage away from structures is clear of debris before fall rains
Outdoor Fireplace and Fire Features
- Inspect mortar joints — focus on crown mortar, firebox surround, and any horizontal surfaces; seal small gaps with an exterior mortar repair product
- Clean the firebox — remove ash, debris, and any accumulated material before winter
- Gas system shutoff — for gas fire features that won’t be used regularly over winter, turn off the gas supply valve at the line
- Cover the firebox opening — a fireplace cover or simple tarp prevents rain and debris accumulation in the firebox during the off-season
Outdoor Kitchen Winterizing
Gas Grill and Appliances
- Deep clean grill grates, burner tubes, and grease management system
- Check all burner ports for debris and corrosion; replace deteriorated components now rather than in spring
- Cover the grill with a fitted weatherproof cover
- Turn off gas supply valve at the line if the grill won’t be used regularly
Outdoor Refrigeration
- Empty and clean outdoor refrigerators before temperatures drop below freezing
- Turn off and unplug outdoor refrigerators that are not frost-free rated for winter temperatures
- Leave the door slightly open on stored refrigerators to prevent mold growth
Plumbing and Water
- Drain outdoor sink supply lines if temperatures will regularly drop below freezing — trapped water in pipes will freeze and crack pipes or fittings
- If the outdoor kitchen has a drain connected to the home’s plumbing, verify the P-trap won’t freeze — pour a small amount of non-toxic RV antifreeze into infrequently used drains
Water Features
- Drain all water features — any standing water in outdoor fountains, bowls, or basins will freeze and can crack stone or concrete
- Remove and store submersible pumps indoors — pumps stored submerged in freezing water can be damaged
- Clean and inspect the water feature structure — look for cracks or deteriorated mortar that should be addressed before winter
Covered Structures and Electrical
- Inspect all electrical connections in outdoor fixtures, outlet boxes, and junction boxes for water intrusion — seal any gaps with exterior-grade silicone
- Clean ceiling fan blades and reverse direction for winter (clockwise at low speed circulates warm air downward)
- Check structure hardware — tighten any fasteners that have loosened through the season
- Store or cover outdoor furniture — or at minimum store cushions and fabric components indoors
Fall Is a Great Time to Build and Repair
Counterintuitively, fall is one of the best construction windows in Oklahoma. Temperatures are moderate, humidity drops, and the absence of summer’s heat makes concrete and masonry work more reliable. Fall is also when contractor schedules begin opening up after the peak summer season.
If your spring or summer inspection revealed problems — cracks, settling, failing mortar — address them this fall rather than waiting for spring. Call VistaScapes & Design at (918) 779-1317 to schedule fall repairs or new construction before the holiday season takes over everyone’s schedule.
