A well-built outdoor kitchen in Oklahoma should last 20–30 years. The difference between one that does and one that deteriorates in 5 years comes down to seasonal maintenance. Here’s the checklist we give every client after completing their outdoor kitchen in Broken Arrow or Tulsa.
Spring Checklist (March–April)
- ☐ Inspect countertop sealer — reseal natural stone if water no longer beads on the surface
- ☐ Check grout lines between tile or stone — repoint any cracked or missing grout before water infiltrates
- ☐ Inspect gas connections — check for any corrosion or loose fittings after winter
- ☐ Test all appliance ignition systems before the season begins
- ☐ Clean stainless steel surfaces with stainless cleaner to remove winter oxidation
- ☐ Check pergola or pavilion hardware — tighten any loose bolts on post bases and beam connections
- ☐ Clear drains and verify water flows away from the structure
- ☐ Inspect caulking around any penetrations through the structure
Summer Checklist (June–August)
- ☐ Clean grill grates monthly — Oklahoma’s heat accelerates grease buildup
- ☐ Check UV-exposed wood surfaces — pergola members may need additional sealant in intense sun
- ☐ Inspect refrigerator door seals — heat causes gaskets to degrade faster outdoors
- ☐ Keep countertop surfaces clean of pooling water after rain events
Fall Checklist (October–November)
- ☐ Deep clean the grill before use slows for the season — remove grease trap, clean burners
- ☐ Winterize the outdoor sink — drain and shut off the water supply line before first freeze
- ☐ Check that outdoor refrigerator is rated for outdoor winter temperatures — some units need to be brought inside below 35°F
- ☐ Cover appliances with breathable covers if the kitchen won’t be used heavily through winter
Winter Checklist (December–February)
- ☐ Before ice storms: shut off outdoor gas valve as a precaution
- ☐ After ice events: inspect masonry for any cracking from freeze-thaw — address early before water infiltrates deeper
- ☐ Keep pergola/pavilion roof clear of heavy ice accumulation
- ☐ Inspect drainage after ground thaw in late February
Annual Professional Inspection
Once per year — ideally in spring — have a professional inspect your gas connections and appliances. Oklahoma’s temperature swings put stress on fittings over time, and a professional inspection catches small issues before they become expensive or dangerous.
