How to Phase an Outdoor Living Project in Oklahoma — VistaScapes Design & Build

One of the most common concerns we hear from Broken Arrow and Tulsa homeowners is that they want a complete outdoor living space — patio, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, pergola — but can’t afford to build it all at once. The good news is that with the right design approach, an outdoor living space can be built in phases over multiple years without looking unfinished at any stage or creating problems when later phases are added. VistaScapes Design & Build has helped dozens of Oklahoma homeowners develop phased outdoor living plans that deliver a beautiful, functional space at each stage.

Why Phasing Requires Upfront Planning

The biggest mistake homeowners make with phased outdoor living is building Phase 1 without planning for Phase 2 and Phase 3. If you pour a concrete patio today without planning for an outdoor kitchen, you may find that the patio is the wrong size, in the wrong location, or doesn’t have the gas and electrical rough-in that the future kitchen requires. Adding infrastructure after the hardscape is installed means cutting into finished work — expensive and avoidable.

At VistaScapes, we always ask about future phases during the initial design consultation. We design the complete vision first, then identify the right phase breaks that allow the project to be built incrementally without creating problems or redundant work.

Recommended Phase Order for Oklahoma Homeowners

Phase 1: Foundation — Patio and Infrastructure

Build the patio first — the correct size and shape for the complete vision. Run gas and electrical conduit to the future kitchen and fire feature locations now, while the ground is open. This is inexpensive when done during Phase 1 and very expensive if done later by cutting through finished concrete or pavers.

Phase 2: Fire Feature

A fire pit or outdoor fireplace is the most impactful upgrade you can add to an existing patio. It immediately transforms the space into an evening entertaining destination. Most fire features can be added to an existing patio without disturbing the surrounding hardscape.

Phase 3: Overhead Structure

Add a pergola or patio cover to the established patio space. By Phase 3, you have a clear sense of how you use the space and where the structure should be positioned for maximum benefit.

Phase 4: Outdoor Kitchen

The outdoor kitchen is typically the most expensive phase — but by this point, the pre-installed gas and electrical conduit from Phase 1 makes the connection straightforward and cost-effective.
