How Natural Gas Is Connected to an Outdoor Kitchen in Oklahoma: What Homeowners Need to Know

One of the most common questions from clients planning their first outdoor kitchen is: how does the gas actually get there? If you’re looking at a built-in grill, side burner, pizza oven, and fire feature — all running on natural gas — understanding how the gas supply works helps you plan your budget and ask the right questions of your contractor.

At VistaScapes Design, every outdoor kitchen project that involves gas appliances includes proper gas supply planning. Here’s what you need to know.

Does Your Home Have Natural Gas Service?

Before planning a natural gas outdoor kitchen, confirm that your home has natural gas service. In the Broken Arrow and Tulsa metro area, natural gas service from Oklahoma Natural Gas (ONG) is available to most residential properties. You can confirm by:

  • Checking your utility bills — if you have an ONG bill, you have natural gas
  • Looking for a gas meter on the exterior of your home
  • Calling Oklahoma Natural Gas at their customer service number

If your home uses an all-electric system (no gas for heating, cooking, or water heating), natural gas extension is still possible but requires a new service connection from ONG — a longer-term and more expensive process than simply extending existing service.

How Natural Gas Gets to Your Outdoor Kitchen

Assuming your home has existing natural gas service, connecting it to your outdoor kitchen involves these steps:

Step 1: Assess the Existing Gas System

The licensed plumber working on your project will assess your existing gas meter, regulator, and supply pipe size to determine whether the existing service capacity can support the additional outdoor kitchen appliances. Most standard residential gas systems can handle typical outdoor kitchen appliance loads, but high-BTU combinations (large grill + side burner + fire pit) may require upgrading the meter or supply line in some cases.

Step 2: Plan the Supply Route

The plumber designs the route from the existing gas supply to the outdoor kitchen location. Options include:

  • Underground run (most common for outdoor kitchens): A trench is excavated from the home to the outdoor kitchen location, a new gas line is run in the trench at the appropriate depth, and the trench is backfilled. Underground lines are protected from damage, invisible in the finished landscape, and don’t require permits for the line itself in most cases (though the connection and appliances do require permits)
  • Above-grade run: In some configurations — particularly for outdoor kitchens adjacent to the home or attached structures — the gas line can run along the exterior of the home’s foundation or through a covered structure without trenching

Step 3: Size the Supply Line Correctly

This is where amateur gas work fails. The gas supply line must be sized for the total BTU demand of all appliances that might operate simultaneously, including an appropriate safety margin. A 30″ grill (40,000 BTU) + side burner (15,000 BTU) + gas fire feature (40,000 BTU) running simultaneously requires adequate line sizing and regulator capacity — not just a line that works for the grill alone.

VistaScapes Design coordinates with licensed plumbers who perform these calculations properly. An undersized gas line means appliances starve for pressure and don’t perform at rated capacity.

Step 4: Install Shutoff and Connect

A dedicated gas shutoff valve accessible at the outdoor kitchen is installed — this allows the gas supply to the outdoor kitchen to be turned off without going back to the main meter. This is a safety requirement and a practical convenience.

The plumber then connects the supply line to the appliance fittings within the outdoor kitchen structure, using proper fittings for outdoor use.

Step 5: Pressure Test and Inspection

All new gas work is pressure-tested before it’s activated — the line is pressurized with air and checked with soap solution for leaks at every connection. In Broken Arrow and most Oklahoma jurisdictions, a building permit is required for new gas line installation, and a city inspector will review the work after it’s complete. This is a safety measure — it protects you, your family, and your investment.

Typical Costs for Gas Extension in the Tulsa and Broken Arrow Market

  • Short run (under 20 feet, minimal trenching): $500–$1,000
  • Medium run (20–50 feet): $800–$1,800
  • Long run (50–100 feet): $1,200–$2,500
  • Complex run with significant trenching, obstacles, or foundation penetration: $1,500–$3,500+

These costs are for the gas line work only — separate from the outdoor kitchen construction itself. VistaScapes Design includes gas supply coordination in our project management and provides a complete, transparent breakdown of all project costs in our quotes.

Propane: The Alternative for Rural Properties

For properties in areas without natural gas service — rural Rogers County, rural Creek County, and many acreage properties throughout northeast Oklahoma — propane (LP gas) is the fuel of choice. Propane outdoor kitchens perform identically to natural gas when appliances are properly configured and the supply system is correctly sized.

Key considerations for propane outdoor kitchen systems:

  • Tank size: 120 gallon minimum for outdoor kitchen use; 250+ gallon for systems with multiple appliances including fire features
  • Tank placement: Tanks must be placed per code requirements (setback from home, setback from property line) and positioned for access by the propane delivery truck
  • Regulator sizing: The regulator must be sized for the total appliance BTU demand — the same calculation requirement as natural gas

Gas Work Is Not DIY Territory

We want to be very clear on this: gas line installation for an outdoor kitchen is not a do-it-yourself project. Improperly installed gas connections are a fire and explosion hazard. Every gas connection in a VistaScapes Design outdoor kitchen is performed by or under the direct supervision of a licensed plumber. This is non-negotiable for the safety of your family and your home.
