Natural stone outdoor fireplaces are in a class of their own. The weight of the material, the variation in color and texture, the way a fieldstone or limestone fireplace settles into the landscape as if it’s always been there — no manufactured product or stucco finish achieves what natural stone masonry does. VistaScapes Design & Build is the natural stone fireplace specialist for Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, crafting outdoor fireplaces from genuine field-gathered and quarried stone that look as good in 30 years as they do the day they’re built.
Natural Stone Types We Use for Outdoor Fireplaces
Fieldstone
Fieldstone fireplaces have a timeless, rustic character that fits naturally in any Oklahoma landscape. Gathered stones in a range of sizes are laid in irregular coursing patterns — each fireplace is genuinely unique because the stone is. Fieldstone walls have natural color variation from deep rust to buff to gray that ages beautifully without any maintenance.
Oklahoma Limestone
Oklahoma has excellent native limestone — a warm buff to cream stone with natural bedding planes and characteristic surface texture. Limestone fireplaces feel native to the region and complement Oklahoma home styles from craftsman to contemporary ranch. We source Oklahoma limestone when possible to reduce cost and support local quarries.
Sandstone
Sandstone in earth tones — rust, orange, tan, and brown — creates incredibly warm, inviting outdoor fireplace faces. The sedimentary texture catches light beautifully in the evening when the fire is burning. Sandstone is a softer stone than limestone, so we protect mortar joints with a proper finish to ensure longevity in Oklahoma’s freeze-thaw cycles.
Stacked Stone Veneer (Natural)
For homeowners who want the look of natural stone on a concrete block or steel-framed structure, we apply genuine natural thin stone veneer — split from real quarried stone, not manufactured. This delivers the authentic material character of natural stone while allowing larger fireplace structures to be built efficiently on a solid CMU or steel frame core.
Built the Right Way
Every natural stone fireplace we build starts with a proper concrete footing poured below grade. The firebox is lined with firebrick and refractory mortar — not regular mortar, which cracks under the thermal stress of repeated heating and cooling. We build the smoke chamber correctly above the firebox, line the flue with clay tile or stainless steel, and cap the chimney with a stone cap and spark arrestor. The exterior natural stone is set in type-S mortar with tight, weatherproof joints.
