Oklahoma’s outdoor kitchen season runs primarily from April through October, with winter use possible but less common for most homeowners. The transitions between peak seasons — spring startup and fall shutdown — are the most important maintenance windows in the outdoor kitchen calendar. What you do (or don’t do) during these transitions determines how your kitchen looks and performs through the coming season and how long your appliances and materials last over the long term.
Spring Startup Checklist (Late March to Early April)
Grill Inspection and Preparation
- Remove the grill cover (if used) and inspect for moisture accumulation, rust spots, or pest damage over winter
- Inspect burner tubes for spider webs, wasp nests, and mud dauber blockages — this is the single most important spring startup step in Oklahoma. Blocked burner tubes cause dangerous uneven flame patterns and potential gas accumulation. Use a small wire or burner brush to clear each tube before first use
- Remove grill grates and soak in hot soapy water; scrub with a grill brush, rinse, and dry completely before reinstalling
- Inspect and clean the drip tray; replace with a new foil liner if the drip tray liner system is used
- Check igniters — replace batteries in battery-powered igniter systems; test manual igniters and replace if spark is weak or absent
- Turn on gas and check for leaks with soapy water solution at all connections; bubbles indicate a leak that must be addressed before use
- Do a burn-off preheat at maximum temperature for 15 minutes before first food cook of the season
Refrigerator Startup
- Clean interior shelves and door bins with warm soapy water and rinse
- Inspect door seals for cracking or deformation from winter temperature cycling; replace if seal doesn’t grip evenly around the full door perimeter
- Clean condenser coils if accessible — dust accumulation on condenser coils makes the compressor work harder and reduces appliance lifespan
- Plug in, allow to reach temperature (typically 2 to 4 hours), and verify thermostat accuracy with a refrigerator thermometer
Structure and Surfaces
- Inspect caulk at countertop perimeter and at the joint between the kitchen structure and home; apply fresh silicone caulk to any cracked or separated joints
- Check grout between tile cladding or tile countertops for cracking; repair with matching grout
- Reseal stone countertops (granite, quartzite) with a penetrating stone sealer; allow full cure time before use
- Inspect overhead covered patio for winter damage — cracked caulk at roof-to-wall transitions, loose screws in fan mounting, any signs of water infiltration
Fall Shutdown Checklist (November)
- Deep clean the grill — full disassembly, cleaning of all grate surfaces, firebox interior, burners, and heat deflectors before long-term storage or reduced use
- Apply stainless steel protectant to all stainless surfaces — grill exterior, refrigerator, side burner, and cabinet doors — before winter exposure
- Winterize outdoor sink — shut off water supply at indoor valve, open outdoor faucet, and blow out remaining water with compressed air or leave faucet cracked open to drain by gravity
- Cover the grill if not using through winter — use only a vented cover to prevent moisture accumulation; never cover a still-warm grill
- Inspect and re-caulk any gaps before freeze-thaw cycles worsen them through winter
