The Ultimate Outdoor Kitchen for College Football Watching Parties in Oklahoma

Oklahoma is football country. OU-Texas Saturday, Bedlam — every fall weekend brings a reason to gather, and the outdoor kitchen is the natural home for the Oklahoma football party. Whether you’re a Sooner, a Cowboy, or just love the game, a well-built outdoor kitchen makes every home game day better than watching at any sports bar.

At VistaScapes Design, we’ve built outdoor kitchens for some of Broken Arrow and Tulsa’s most dedicated football hosts. Here’s the setup that makes a game day legendary.

The TV Setup: Non-Negotiable

An outdoor TV is the first and most critical game-day feature. For an outdoor kitchen game-day setup, we specify:

Outdoor-Rated TV

An indoor TV outside for more than one season is a display warranty failure waiting to happen — humidity, heat cycling, and Oklahoma’s spring and fall rain take an indoor TV apart quickly. Use:

  • SunBrite TVs: The standard outdoor TV brand — built specifically for outdoor installation, readable in direct Oklahoma summer sun (brightness: 700+ nits, vs. indoor TVs at 200-400 nits)
  • Samsung The Terrace: Premium QLED outdoor TV with exceptional brightness and weatherproofing
  • Séura Shade Series: Covered patio option for indirect light environments

Minimum screen size for an outdoor kitchen bar: 55 inches. For a dedicated game-day outdoor setup, 65 to 85 inches makes the game genuinely watchable from anywhere in the space.

Mounting Position

TV mounted on the wall or on a dedicated swing-arm bracket, at a height where seated bar guests view it at 10 to 20 degrees below eye level. Avoid mounting above a fireplace — the heat cycles and awkward neck-up viewing angle are both problems. A dedicated outdoor TV post on the edge of the patio or a pergola-integrated mount keeps the viewing angle optimal.

Sound System

Outdoor audio transforms the game-day experience. We install exterior-rated speaker systems — Polk Audio Atrium, Klipsch AW, or Sonos Outdoor — in the pergola structure or on wall mounts flanking the TV. A 2.1 system (two main speakers plus a subwoofer) delivers crowd noise and announcer clarity that makes the outdoor watching experience genuinely immersive.

The Cooking Station for Game Day Volume

Game day cooking means volume. Twenty guests, long cooking session, varied appetites. The ideal game-day outdoor kitchen:

Primary Grill: 42 to 54 Inches

A larger primary grill means more simultaneous cooking capacity — burgers, brats, chicken, and bacon-wrapped jalapeños all on at once. Blaze Professional 44-inch or Fire Magic Echelon E1060s are perfect game-day grills: serious sear, enough surface area to feed a crowd without running three rounds of everything.

Side Burner for Sauces and Dips

A dedicated side burner runs the Velveeta-and-Rotel queso, simmers the chili, and heats the brisket beans while the primary grill runs the main proteins. Oklahoma game-day food requires a side burner.

Warming Drawer

A warming drawer keeps the first round of burgers and brats warm while the second round finishes. With 20+ guests, nobody wants cold food while the grill catches up.

Pizza Oven (Optional but Popular)

An outdoor pizza oven is a game-day crowd pleaser — fresh pizzas coming out of the oven every 90 seconds throughout the third quarter keeps the snack table continuously restocked without the host leaving the action.

Beverage Station for the Game

Kegerator or Draft System

For beer-drinking football households, a built-in kegerator or glycol-chilled draft tower in the outdoor kitchen bar is the game-day feature that changes everything. A full-size keg (half-barrel, 15.5 gallons) handles a large gathering with one fill. Cold draft beer on tap, poured at the outdoor bar, beats fighting a cooler every time.

Ice Maker

A built-in Scotsman or True ice maker running 25 to 50 lbs of ice per day eliminates the cooler-run problem. Oklahoma fall game days aren’t always cool — October Bedlam can still be warm enough that ice consumption is significant.

Large Refrigerator

Enough cold storage for the full game-day spread: drinks, protein, condiments, and the dessert items staying cold until the fourth quarter. A True 24-inch undercounter refrigerator holds enough for a substantial game-day party.

Seating Arrangements for Game Day Watching

The game-day outdoor kitchen needs seating designed around the TV viewing angle:

  • Bar stools at the outdoor bar: Primary viewing position — guests sit at bar height facing the TV
  • Lounge seating at the fire pit: Alternative viewing zone at fire-pit-level furniture for guests not at the bar — position the fire pit lounge with sightlines to the TV where possible
  • Standing/food table area: A flat surface near the grill where guests can set plates without occupying bar or lounge seating during the game
