Outdoor Kitchen Frame: Concrete Block vs. Steel Frame in Oklahoma
One of the most consequential decisions in any outdoor kitchen build is the frame material. Get it right, and your outdoor kitchen lasts 20-30 years with minimal maintenance. Get it wrong, and you’re dealing with structural issues, moisture problems, and costly repairs within a decade. Here’s an honest comparison from the VistaScapes Design team, who has built outdoor kitchens in Broken Arrow and the Tulsa area for years.
Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) Block: The Gold Standard
CMU block — the same material used in commercial construction and residential foundation walls — is our preferred outdoor kitchen frame material for Oklahoma builds. Here’s why:
Advantages of CMU Block
- Moisture impervious — concrete doesn’t rust, rot, or absorb moisture the way steel and wood do
- Structural rigidity — handles Oklahoma’s temperature cycles from 10°F winters to 105°F summers without warping or moving
- Superior load capacity — supports heavy granite, quartzite, or concrete countertops without deflection
- Fire resistance — no concerns about proximity to grills or burners
- Longevity — a properly built CMU outdoor kitchen can last 30-50 years
- Foundation for any finish — stone veneer, stucco, tile, and brick all adhere perfectly to CMU
Disadvantages of CMU Block
- Heavier — requires a properly poured concrete slab; cannot be placed on existing pavers without reinforcement
- Slower to build — masonry takes more time than steel stud framing
- Higher upfront cost — typically $3,000–$8,000 more than an equivalent steel build
- Less flexibility for changes — moving or expanding a CMU kitchen requires demolition
Steel Stud Frame Outdoor Kitchens
Some outdoor kitchen contractors use steel stud framing — the same material used in interior commercial construction. It has its place, but we have significant reservations about its use in Oklahoma’s climate.
Advantages of Steel Stud
- Faster installation — a steel stud frame can be built in a day; CMU takes several days
- Lower initial cost — labor and material costs are lower
- Easier to modify — cutting and adjusting steel studs is simpler than breaking concrete
- Lighter weight — can sometimes be placed on existing patios
Disadvantages of Steel Stud in Oklahoma
- Moisture vulnerability — Oklahoma’s humid summers, spring rains, and condensation from refrigeration units create moisture intrusion risk. Any gap in the cement board sheathing allows water to reach the steel, causing rust
- Thermal movement — metal expands and contracts significantly with Oklahoma’s temperature swings, potentially cracking finish materials
- Shorter lifespan — steel stud outdoor kitchens in Oklahoma typically need significant repairs within 10-15 years
- Fire proximity concerns — steel studs near high-BTU burners and grills require careful planning to avoid heat stress on the metal
What About Aluminum Frame Outdoor Kitchen Kits?
A third option gaining popularity: factory-built outdoor kitchen modules with aluminum frames. These are sold as complete kits and delivered to your home. Aluminum is rust-proof and handles Oklahoma weather reasonably well. The limitations:
- Modular dimensions — you’re limited to kit sizes, not custom layouts
- Finish options are restricted — fewer cladding choices than custom CMU builds
- Lower perceived value for resale
- Not as structurally rigid as CMU under heavy countertop loads
Aluminum frame kits work well for budget-conscious projects or rental properties. For a forever home, CMU is still our recommendation.
Our Recommendation for Oklahoma Outdoor Kitchens
For Broken Arrow and Tulsa-area homeowners investing in a quality outdoor kitchen, we build CMU block. Every time. The upfront cost premium pays back in longevity, reduced maintenance, and the confidence that your investment will hold up to everything Oklahoma weather delivers.
