Knowing what to expect — and how to prepare — helps you get the most out of the meeting and speeds the path from consultation to a design you love. Here’s what the process looks like.
What Happens During the Consultation
Site Assessment (15–20 Minutes)
We start by walking your outdoor space together. We’re looking at: the existing patio or lawn area and its dimensions, how the space relates to your home’s entry points (doors, windows, existing patio access), where the afternoon sun falls, wind direction relative to your typical seating areas, existing utility locations (gas shutoff, electrical panel, water supply), and any HOA setback constraints that affect structure placement.
Vision Discussion (20–30 Minutes)
We’ll ask you questions that help us understand how you’ll actually use your outdoor kitchen: How often do you entertain? How many people typically? Do you prefer cooking alone or cooking with guests nearby? What’s the ratio of casual family cooking to larger parties? Do you already have outdoor furniture in mind? Are there specific appliances or features you know you want? We’ll also discuss budget range — this helps us design the right scope rather than designing something that’s either under-featured or over-budget.
Preliminary Layout Discussion (10–15 Minutes)
Based on the site assessment and vision discussion, we’ll sketch out preliminary ideas on paper or discuss layout concepts — where the island would go, what coverage might look like, where gas and electrical would run. This gives you a sense of the general approach before we take it back to the design phase.
What to Bring to Your Consultation
- Photos of outdoor kitchens you love — saved from Pinterest, Instagram, or our own gallery. Showing us what resonates with you visually is faster and more accurate than describing it verbally.
- Your HOA guidelines — if your neighborhood has an HOA with outdoor structure requirements, bring those documents or have them accessible so we can review them on-site.
- A rough budget range — you don’t need a precise number, but a ballpark ($20,000–$30,000 vs. $50,000–$70,000) helps us design the right scope from the start.
- Any existing plans or drawings of your property — plat maps or site plans showing property dimensions and setback lines are helpful but not required.
What Happens After the Consultation
Within 7–14 days of your on-site consultation, we deliver a 3D design concept and detailed proposal to you — by email or in a follow-up meeting, depending on your preference. The 3D design shows the outdoor kitchen from multiple angles with your actual yard as the context — not a generic rendering. The proposal includes a detailed line-item breakdown of scope, materials, appliances, and pricing.
