The Initial Phone Call
Before the on-site visit, we typically have a brief phone conversation to understand the basics of your project. We’ll ask about your general vision (do you have an idea of what you want, or are you starting from scratch?), your backyard layout, and your timeline. This helps us show up to the consultation with relevant context and some preliminary ideas. The call usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.
The On-Site Visit
The on-site consultation is where the real work begins. We’ll come to your property and spend time in your backyard — typically 45 minutes to 90 minutes for an initial consultation. Here’s what happens during that visit:
- We assess the space — we walk the backyard, measure, and look at sun exposure, existing structures, drainage, and access points for gas and electrical
- We ask about how you live outdoors — how often do you cook outside? What do you typically cook? How many people do you usually host? Do you have children or pets that affect the layout?
- We ask about budget — we need to understand your investment range to design appropriately; there’s no point designing a $70,000 outdoor kitchen if your budget is $25,000
- We discuss preferences — specific appliances, materials, styles you like or don’t like; photos you’ve saved from Pinterest or Instagram are genuinely helpful at this stage
- We discuss constraints — HOA requirements, property line setbacks, utility locations, existing structures that affect the design
What to Have Ready for Your Consultation
You’ll get more from your consultation if you come prepared with:
- An honest budget range (a range is fine — you don’t need an exact number)
- Photos of outdoor kitchens you like (Instagram, Pinterest, Houzz are great sources)
- A list of specific appliances you want if you have strong preferences (grill size, pizza oven, ice maker, etc.)
- Your HOA architectural guidelines if applicable
- Knowledge of where your gas and electrical are currently run in the backyard
After the Consultation — What Comes Next
After our on-site visit, we go back and develop a design and a detailed quote. This typically takes one to two weeks depending on project complexity. We’ll send you a written proposal that includes the specific scope of work, materials, appliances by make and model, and total investment. We’ll then schedule a follow-up call to walk through the proposal together and answer any questions.
