Buying a first home in Broken Arrow, Owasso, or anywhere in the Tulsa metro is one of the most exciting milestones a person can reach — and for many new homeowners, dreaming about what they’ll do with the backyard starts before the ink dries on the closing documents. An outdoor kitchen is often near the top of that list. Here’s what first-time homeowners should know before they build.
Should You Build an Outdoor Kitchen Right Away?
The honest answer: not always immediately. Most experienced outdoor kitchen owners recommend living in your home for six to twelve months before building a permanent outdoor kitchen. Why? Because that time reveals things you couldn’t predict during the purchase process:
- Where the afternoon shade falls in different seasons
- How you actually use the backyard (which direction you naturally face, where you congregate)
- Any drainage patterns that would affect patio placement
- Your HOA’s actual review timeline and requirements
- Whether gas service is already close to the back of the home or requires a longer run
That said, some new homeowners know exactly what they want and are ready to build immediately — there’s nothing wrong with that if you’ve thought it through carefully and have worked with a contractor who visits the property before finalizing any design.
What to Prioritize on a First Home Outdoor Kitchen Budget
First-time homeowners often have tighter budgets after the down payment and closing costs. Here’s how we recommend prioritizing when budget is a consideration:
- Gas line stub-out first — if you’re planning to grill with natural gas, get the gas line run during the build. Retrofitting this later is expensive.
- Quality grill over everything else — a great grill on a simple island is better than a mediocre grill on an elaborate setup. The grill is what you cook on.
- Build the structure to expand — design the island so you can add a refrigerator or extend the counter later without demolishing what you built
- Defer the pergola if needed — a solid island without a shade structure is still useful. The pergola can be added in year two or three.
