Outdoor Kitchen Gas BTU Guide: Sizing Gas Lines for Oklahoma

Gas supply is one of the most technically critical elements of any outdoor kitchen installation — and one that’s frequently undersized by contractors who don’t specialize in outdoor kitchens. VistaScapes Design works with licensed plumbers on every Broken Arrow and Tulsa-area outdoor kitchen project to ensure gas lines are properly sized for the total BTU demand of all planned appliances.

Why BTU Sizing Matters

An undersized gas line delivers insufficient pressure to appliances under load. Symptoms of undersized gas supply:

  • Grill burners won’t reach full temperature
  • Flame height drops when multiple appliances run simultaneously
  • Side burner won’t reach proper temperature for boiling
  • Fire pit flame appears weak or uneven
  • All appliances seem to underperform their rated output

These problems are often blamed on faulty appliances when the real issue is inadequate gas supply — a line sized for one appliance that now serves three.

BTU Requirements by Common Outdoor Kitchen Appliances

Built-In Grills

  • 3-burner grill (30″): 30,000–45,000 BTU/hr
  • 4-burner grill (36″): 40,000–60,000 BTU/hr
  • 5-burner grill (42–48″): 55,000–80,000 BTU/hr
  • Rear infrared burner (rotisserie): 12,000–18,000 BTU/hr additional

Side Burners and Accessories

  • Single side burner: 12,000–15,000 BTU/hr
  • Double side burner: 24,000–30,000 BTU/hr
  • Wok burner: 60,000–65,000 BTU/hr (high-output specialty)
  • Pizza oven (gas): 20,000–40,000 BTU/hr

Fire Features

  • Fire pit (linear or round): 60,000–90,000 BTU/hr
  • Outdoor fireplace insert: 65,000–150,000 BTU/hr
  • Patio heater (infrared ceiling): 30,000–40,000 BTU/hr

Total Load Calculation

To size your gas line correctly, add the BTU ratings of all appliances that might run simultaneously — not just the grill alone. A typical outdoor kitchen with a 4-burner grill (50,000 BTU), side burner (15,000 BTU), and fire pit (75,000 BTU) has a simultaneous total demand of 140,000 BTU/hr. The gas line must support this load at adequate pressure.

Line Sizing Factors

Proper gas line sizing depends on:

  • Total BTU demand at simultaneous load
  • Gas pressure at the meter (typically 0.25″ WC for low-pressure residential)
  • Line length from the meter to the outdoor kitchen
  • Pipe diameter (larger diameter = less pressure drop over distance)

These calculations are performed by our licensed plumbing partners for every outdoor kitchen project — not estimated.

Future-Proofing Your Gas Line

We recommend sizing the gas line for your complete planned outdoor kitchen — including appliances you might add in Phase 2 or Phase 3. Oversizing slightly now is far cheaper than running a second line later. If you’re building a 4-burner grill today but plan to add a fire pit next year, size the line for both now.
