Outdoor Kitchen Project Timeline in Oklahoma: From First Call to Final Walkthrough

One of the most common questions we get from Broken Arrow and Tulsa homeowners is: “How long will this take?” It’s a fair question — a significant outdoor kitchen project affects your backyard for weeks of construction and your family for years of enjoyment. Here’s an honest, phase-by-phase breakdown of what to expect from VistaScapes Design.

Phase 1: Initial Contact and Consultation — Week 1 to 2

The process starts when you call us at (918) 779-1317 or reach out online. We typically schedule a site consultation within one to two weeks of your initial contact, depending on our current project load.

The consultation is a 45-to-90-minute meeting at your home. We assess the site, discuss your cooking habits and entertaining style, walk through layout options, and talk through the appliance selections and finish options that match your vision and budget. After the consultation, we typically follow up within three to five business days with a detailed written proposal.

Phase 2: Design and Proposal Review — Week 2 to 4

After the consultation, we develop a detailed project proposal including:

  • Structural layout drawings showing dimensions and appliance placement
  • Material specifications for CMU block construction, countertop, and exterior finish
  • Appliance list with model numbers and specifications
  • Itemized pricing for all components
  • Project timeline estimate

We review the proposal with you over a second meeting or call. Most homeowners have refinements — a different appliance selection, an adjustment to the layout, or a change in countertop material. We finalize the scope, sign the contract, and begin the procurement and permitting process.

Phase 3: Permitting and Material Procurement — Week 4 to 8

Depending on your municipality, a building permit may be required for a permanent outdoor kitchen. In Broken Arrow and most Tulsa metro municipalities, gas line work and permanent structures require permits. We handle the permit application process on your behalf.

Permit timelines vary significantly:

  • Broken Arrow: typically 1–3 weeks for permit approval
  • Tulsa: 2–4 weeks depending on permit backlog
  • Smaller municipalities: varies; sometimes faster, sometimes slower

Simultaneously with permitting, we order your appliances, countertop slab, and any specialty materials. Custom countertop fabrication typically takes 1–2 weeks after the slab is selected. Appliances from our standard Blaze, Coyote, and Napoleon lines are usually available within 1–3 weeks. Custom or specialty items may take longer.

Phase 4: Site Preparation and Foundation Work — Day 1 to 3 of Construction

When permits are approved and materials are ready, we schedule your construction start. The first phase involves:

  • Marking the layout on your patio or concrete slab
  • Any concrete cutting or additional slab work if needed
  • Underground utility trenching if gas or water lines need to be extended from the house
  • Concrete footing pours where required by your specific soil and load conditions

Phase 5: CMU Block Frame Construction — Day 2 to 5

The CMU (concrete masonry unit) block frame is the backbone of your outdoor kitchen. Our crews lay CMU block courses according to the structural drawings, incorporating openings for appliance cutouts, access doors, and utility runs. Block work typically takes two to four days depending on the size and complexity of the project.

During block work, our plumbers rough in the gas line runs through the structure, and our electricians rough in the conduit for electrical circuits. These trades work in coordination with the block crew.

Phase 6: Utility Rough-In and Inspection — Day 5 to 8

With the block structure complete, gas and electrical rough-in work is finalized. Gas lines are pressure-tested. A rough-in inspection from the local building department may be required at this stage before we can proceed to finish work. We coordinate this scheduling.

Phase 7: Exterior Finish Application — Day 6 to 10

The exterior finish — stucco, stone veneer, or tile — is applied after the block work and before or simultaneously with countertop installation depending on sequencing. Stone veneer installation typically takes one to two days. Stucco requires multiple coats with drying time between applications and can take two to four days.

Phase 8: Countertop Installation — Day 8 to 12

Your custom-fabricated granite or quartzite countertop is templated after the block structure is complete, then cut and polished at the fabrication shop, then installed and sealed. The fabrication and installation process adds four to seven days to the schedule from template to installed slab.

Phase 9: Appliance Installation and Utility Connections — Day 10 to 14

With the structure, finish, and countertop complete, we install the built-in grill, refrigerator, side burners, access doors, drawers, and any other appliances. Gas lines are connected and tested. Electrical circuits are terminated. Sinks are plumbed. This phase typically takes one to two days for a standard project.

Phase 10: Final Inspection and Walkthrough — Day 14 to 16

We schedule the final building inspection, demonstrate all appliances and systems, review care and maintenance with you, and walk through every detail of the finished project. At final walkthrough, your new outdoor kitchen is live and ready to use.

Total Timeline Summary

For a typical Broken Arrow or Tulsa outdoor kitchen project:

  • Consultation to contract: 2–4 weeks
  • Contract to construction start: 4–8 weeks (permitting and procurement)
  • Construction: 10–16 business days on site
  • Total from first call to completed project: 8–14 weeks for most projects

Complex projects with significant utility extensions, custom features, or large footprints may run longer. Projects in municipalities with faster permitting can sometimes come in closer to 6–8 weeks total.
