What to Expect: Your Outdoor Kitchen Project Timeline in Oklahoma

One of the most common questions we get from Oklahoma homeowners is: “How long will this take?” The honest answer depends on your project’s complexity — but here’s a realistic, week-by-week breakdown of what a standard custom outdoor kitchen build looks like with VistaScapes & Design.

Week 1–2: Design Consultation and Planning

Your project begins with a free on-site consultation. We visit your property, take measurements, discuss your vision, and assess your existing infrastructure (gas lines, electrical, drainage). Within a few days of the consultation, we provide a detailed proposal with itemized costs, material selections, and a preliminary layout.

Once you approve the design and sign the contract, we move into formal planning: finalizing appliance selections, ordering custom countertop materials if needed, and preparing permit documentation.

Week 2–4: Permits and Material Procurement

In most Oklahoma municipalities — Broken Arrow, Tulsa, Owasso, Bixby, and others — outdoor kitchen permits are issued within 1–2 weeks for standard projects. We submit all permit applications on your behalf.

Simultaneously, we’re sourcing your materials: stone or brick veneer, countertop slabs, appliances, masonry block, and structural components. Standard appliances from brands like Blaze, Napoleon, or Coyote are typically in stock. Special-order or custom items add 2–3 weeks to this phase.

Week 4–5: Site Preparation

Once permits are in hand and materials are staged, construction begins. Week 4–5 covers site preparation: marking the layout, any necessary excavation for footings, and pouring the concrete pad if your project requires a new slab. Existing patios in good condition often don’t require new pads.

This is also when we rough-in underground gas lines if they need to run beneath the patio surface — much easier to do before the structure is built.

Week 5–7: Island Frame Construction

The island frame is the structural backbone of your outdoor kitchen. We build with concrete masonry units (CMU block) for most projects, which provides superior durability and pest resistance. The frame is laid out according to your design, with openings for appliances, access doors, and drawers positioned precisely.

Gas rough-in and electrical rough-in happen during this phase — conduit is run, gas lines are stubbed out at each appliance location, and inspections are scheduled with the city.

Week 7–8: Veneer and Countertops

The veneer — stone, brick, or stucco — is applied to the exterior of the frame. This phase transforms the raw block structure into the finished, beautiful outdoor kitchen you designed. Countertops are templated, cut, and installed: granite slabs are cut to fit your specific layout, porcelain tile is set and grouted, or concrete tops are poured and sealed.

Week 8–9: Appliance Installation and Final Connections

Built-in grills, side burners, refrigerators, ice makers, sinks, and other appliances are installed and connected. Gas lines receive their final connections and pressure testing. Electrical outlets, lighting, and switches are finalized. Plumbing connections for the sink are completed.

Week 9–10: Final Inspection and Walk-Through

We schedule the final city inspection for gas, electrical, and structural work. Once the inspector signs off, we conduct a detailed walk-through with you — showing you how to operate every appliance, explaining maintenance requirements, and making sure you’re 100% satisfied before we call the project complete.

Factors That Can Extend the Timeline

  • Custom or special-order appliances: Add 2–4 weeks
  • Custom fabricated countertops: Add 1–2 weeks for templating and fabrication
  • Covered patio or pergola addition: Add 2–3 weeks
  • Fireplace or fire feature: Add 1–2 weeks
  • Significant excavation or drainage work: Add 1–2 weeks
  • Permit delays: Rare in most Oklahoma municipalities, but possible
