Bar Seating at the Kitchen Counter
A countertop overhang on the guest side of the outdoor kitchen creates bar seating where guests can sit, watch the cooking, and be part of the action. Standard bar height is 42 inches with barstools. Counter height is 36 inches with counter-height chairs. We design the overhang depth (typically 12–15 inches) and knee clearance for comfortable seating.

A dedicated outdoor dining table positioned 8–12 feet from the kitchen creates a clear separation between the cooking zone and the eating zone. We design the hardscape layout so the two areas connect naturally without awkward traffic flow.

The path from grill to table should be short, clear, and not cross other traffic paths. We position the kitchen so the cook can serve easily without navigating around guests or furniture.
Sightlines
The cook should be able to see and interact with guests in the seating area — not facing a wall with their back to the party. We design kitchen layouts that keep the grill master part of the conversation.
Proportions
Seating areas that are too small for the kitchen — or kitchens that overwhelm a modest patio — look unplanned. We proportion both zones for the space and the scale of the home.
Shade Strategy
Oklahoma summers demand shade solutions over seating areas. We integrate overhead shade — pergola, patio cover, or sail shade — into the overall design so the seating area is actually comfortable during the majority of the outdoor season.
Hardscape Integration
