Outdoor Kitchen for Sports Fans in Oklahoma — Watching the Game Outside

by | May 23, 2026 | Uncategorized

Oklahoma is serious about sports — OU football, OSU football, the Thunder, Tulsa Golden Hurricane games — and Broken Arrow and Tulsa homeowners who invest in outdoor kitchens frequently cite game day entertaining as one of their primary use cases. An outdoor kitchen designed for sports entertaining is a specific thing: it needs the right TV placement, the right cooking capacity for a crowd, and the right bar seating configuration to keep people together around the game.

TV Setup for Game Day Outdoor Kitchens

The television is the anchor of any sports-focused outdoor kitchen. Getting it right means:

  • Size matters more outdoors: The ambient light and open-air viewing distances in an outdoor setting mean you want a larger screen than you’d use indoors for the same viewing distance. A 65″ TV that feels large in a living room feels right-sized outdoors — 75″ to 85″ is popular for dedicated game day outdoor setups.
  • Outdoor-rated TV is non-negotiable: Oklahoma’s humidity, temperature swings, and occasional moisture exposure make outdoor-rated TVs essential. A television under a covered pergola needs at minimum a “covered” outdoor-rated model; direct sun exposure requires a full outdoor “sun” rated model.
  • Brightness for daytime games: College and NFL games often air in the afternoon. Oklahoma’s afternoon sky is bright — a standard indoor TV or even a standard outdoor TV struggles to be visible in bright ambient light. TVs rated at 700+ nits perform adequately under a covered patio during daytime games; 1,000+ nits is better for bright afternoon conditions.
  • Multiple viewing angles: Position the TV so it’s visible from both the cooking area and the bar/seating area — the people talking to the cook while you grill should be able to watch the game too.

Cooking Capacity for Game Day Crowds

Game day entertaining in Oklahoma means a lot of food coming off the grill simultaneously. For dedicated sports entertaining kitchens:

  • 36″ or larger built-in grill as the primary cooking appliance — handles multiple racks of ribs, a full load of brats and burgers, or a batch of chicken simultaneously
  • High-BTU side burner for queso, chili, or large-batch sides
  • Warming drawer to keep the first round of food hot while the second batch finishes on the grill
  • Built-in smoker for low-and-slow brisket that’s ready at game time regardless of when kickoff is

Bar Seating — Keeping the Group Together

The social structure of game day entertaining puts everyone at the bar — not scattered across the patio. Bar seating at counter or bar height (36″–42″), positioned facing the TV with a clear sightline, keeps the group together and in conversation throughout the game. Plan for 18–24″ per stool and ensure the bar counter is deep enough (12″–16″ overhang) for comfortable seating with food and drinks.

Shade for September and October Football

Oklahoma football season starts in late August and early September — some of the hottest months of the year. A covered structure is essentially required for game day outdoor entertaining in September, when afternoon temperatures routinely hit 90–95°F in the Broken Arrow area. A covered pergola with ceiling fans makes afternoon games comfortable. Infrared heaters extend the covered kitchen into November and early December for late-season games.
