After an Oklahoma winter, your outdoor kitchen needs a thorough inspection and cleaning before the grilling season kicks off. Skipping this step can mean nasty surprises — a gas leak you didn’t know about, a grill igniter that won’t fire, or a refrigerator that underperforms all summer. At VistaScapes Design & Build, we put together this spring opening checklist to help Broken Arrow and Tulsa-area homeowners get their outdoor kitchens back in top shape every year.
Step 1: Inspect the Structure
- Walk the perimeter and look for cracks in stucco, stone veneer, or tile
- Check countertop edges and seams for chips or lifting
- Inspect the countertop surface for staining or sealer wear (natural stone needs resealing every 1–2 years)
- Look for any signs of water intrusion — discoloration, efflorescence (white mineral deposits), or soft spots
- Check that all cabinet doors and drawer fronts open and close properly
Step 2: Clean All Surfaces
- Sweep and wash the countertops with a mild soap appropriate for your material
- Clean stainless steel surfaces with a stainless steel cleaner — wipe in the direction of the grain
- Power wash the surrounding patio if needed (avoid direct spray on stone or grout at close range)
- Clean the interior of all cabinets and storage areas
- Wipe down all appliance exteriors with a damp cloth
Step 3: Check the Gas System
- Inspect visible gas lines and connections for any damage or corrosion
- Apply soapy water to all fittings and connections with the gas on — bubbles indicate a leak
- If you detect any leak, turn off the gas at the shutoff valve and call a licensed gas contractor immediately
- Check the gas shutoff valve to ensure it opens and closes smoothly
- If your kitchen uses a propane tank, check the tank level and inspect the regulator
Step 4: Service the Grill
- Remove grill grates and clean with a grill brush; inspect for rust
- Clean the burners with a wire brush; check burner ports for clogs (spiders love to nest in gas burners over winter)
- Clean the drip tray and grease management system thoroughly
- Test the igniter on every burner; replace batteries in electronic ignition systems
- Light each burner and verify consistent, blue flame; yellow or orange flames indicate airflow issues
- Check the grill lid hinges, handles, and temperature gauge
Step 5: Service All Other Appliances
- Refrigerator: plug in, verify cooling, clean interior, wipe door gasket
- Ice maker: flush the water line, run a clean cycle, check the drain
- Side burners: test ignition and flame quality on each burner
- Outdoor sink: check hot/cold supply, test drain, inspect P-trap under the sink
- Pizza oven or smoker: inspect seals, clean interior, test ignition if gas-powered
Step 6: Check Electrical Systems
- Test all GFCI outlets — press test and reset buttons
- Test all lighting fixtures; replace any burned-out bulbs
- Check outdoor ceiling fans for wobble or noise
- Inspect weatherproof covers on all outlets and switches
Step 7: Check the Covered Structure (If Applicable)
- Inspect pergola or patio cover for any winter damage
- Check attachment points to the house for any movement or gaps
- Inspect gutters or drainage channels if your cover has them
- Tighten any loose fasteners on the structure
