Outdoor Kitchen Spring Startup Checklist for Oklahoma Homeowners
After an Oklahoma winter — with its ice storms, freeze-thaw cycles, and extended non-use — your outdoor kitchen needs a proper spring inspection and startup before you fire it up for the season. VistaScapes Design serves homeowners in Broken Arrow and across northeastern Oklahoma, and we’ve put together this complete spring startup checklist so your outdoor kitchen season starts without surprises.
Gas System Check
- ☐ Inspect gas supply shutoff valve — ensure it opens and closes smoothly; replace if stiff or corroded
- ☐ Check gas line connections — visually inspect all flex connectors and rigid line connections for corrosion or physical damage
- ☐ Soap test all connections — apply soapy water to all connections and fittings; bubbles indicate a leak. If you find a leak, shut off gas immediately and call a licensed plumber before using any appliances
- ☐ Check gas pressure — if burners seem weak or flame color is orange rather than blue, low gas pressure may be the cause; have a plumber check line pressure
Grill Inspection and Cleaning
- ☐ Remove grill cover and inspect for winter damage — frost cracking, condensation staining, or animal nesting under the cover
- ☐ Inspect burner tubes — this is critical: spiders and insects love to nest in burner tubes during off-season. Blocked tubes cause uneven heat, flame rollout, and potential fire hazard. Remove burners and use a flexible brush to clear any obstructions
- ☐ Check igniter systems — test each burner’s igniter; replace igniters that don’t spark reliably
- ☐ Clean grates — brush off winter residue; for cast iron grates, re-season with oil before first cook of the season
- ☐ Clean drip tray and grease catch — empty and clean thoroughly; old grease becomes a fire hazard
- ☐ Inspect the grill box interior — check for rust or debris; a light coat of cooking spray on interior surfaces after cleaning helps protect against rust during the season
Refrigerator and Ice Maker Startup
- ☐ Clean refrigerator interior with a mild solution before restocking
- ☐ Inspect door gaskets — press the gasket against the door frame; gaps indicate seal failure and reduced efficiency
- ☐ Check condenser coils — dust and debris accumulate on coils during winter; vacuum clean for efficient operation
- ☐ Reconnect water line to ice maker if you disconnected it for winter
- ☐ Run ice maker and discard first batch — clean the system with manufacturer-approved cleaner if it sat all winter
Plumbing Check
- ☐ Reconnect outdoor water supply if you shut it off for winter
- ☐ Inspect supply lines for any cracking or damage from freeze events
- ☐ Check drain lines for obstructions from debris accumulation over winter
- ☐ Run water through the sink and check for leaks at all fittings
Countertop and Structure Check
- ☐ Inspect countertop sealer — drop water on the countertop; if it soaks in rather than beading, reseal before season use
- ☐ Check stone veneer mortar joints — look for cracking or loose mortar from freeze-thaw cycles; tuckpoint any damaged joints
- ☐ Inspect for cracks in concrete or masonry — small cracks can grow through the summer; address promptly
- ☐ Check stucco finish for hairline cracks; repair with elastomeric caulk
Electrical Check
- ☐ Test all GFCI outlets — press test and reset on each GFCI outlet; replace any that don’t reset properly
- ☐ Inspect light fixtures for moisture infiltration or bulb burnout from winter weather
- ☐ Check outdoor speaker connections if applicable
First Cook of the Season
Before cooking food, run the grill on high heat with the lid closed for 15–20 minutes. This burns off any residual winter debris, kills any bacteria that may have accumulated, and re-seasons the cooking surfaces. Then you’re ready for the season.
