Outdoor Kitchen Structural Frames — Concrete Block vs Steel Stud vs ICF in Oklahoma

by | May 23, 2026 | Uncategorized

The structural frame of your outdoor kitchen is what everything else is attached to — the countertop, the appliances, the stone veneer, the cabinets. Most homeowners don’t think much about the frame because it’s buried inside the finished kitchen, but it’s one of the most important quality indicators in any outdoor kitchen build. In Oklahoma’s climate, the wrong frame material creates expensive problems in just a few years.

Why Outdoor Kitchen Frames Fail

The most common outdoor kitchen failure in Oklahoma isn’t the grill or the countertop — it’s the structural frame. Frames built from wood, standard drywall, or cement board designed for indoor use deteriorate quickly when exposed to Oklahoma’s humidity, freeze-thaw cycles, and driving rain. Wood frames rot. Standard cement board that isn’t rated for full weather exposure cracks and delaminate. By year three or four, the kitchen exterior begins to crack, shift, and fail — not because of bad finish work, but because the skeleton underneath wasn’t right for the environment.

Concrete Block (CMU) Frames

Concrete masonry unit (CMU) frames — colloquially called concrete block or cinder block — are the gold standard for outdoor kitchen construction in Oklahoma. CMU structures are:

  • Completely weather-proof: Concrete block doesn’t rot, warp, or deteriorate in moisture. Oklahoma’s spring rains, humidity, and ice storms have no structural effect on a properly built CMU frame.
  • Thermally stable: Concrete block doesn’t expand and contract significantly with Oklahoma’s temperature swings, which means finish materials (stone veneer, stucco, tile) stay bonded without cracking.
  • Fire-resistant: Appropriate for outdoor kitchen environments near grills, smokers, and fire features.
  • Long-lasting: A well-built CMU outdoor kitchen frame has a practical lifespan measured in decades — 30, 40, or 50+ years.

The main limitation of CMU is weight and cost. Concrete block is heavier than steel stud framing, which may require a reinforced concrete slab base. It also requires skilled masonry labor, which is more expensive than assembling a steel stud frame. For a permanent outdoor kitchen intended to last the life of the home, CMU is almost always the right investment.

Steel Stud Frames with Cement Board

Steel stud framing with exterior-rated cement board sheathing is a common mid-range outdoor kitchen construction method. The steel frame doesn’t rot or warp, and exterior-rated cement board (HardieBacker, Durock with appropriate waterproofing) provides a suitable substrate for stone veneer or tile finishes when properly installed.

Steel stud construction is lighter and faster to build than CMU, making it less expensive in labor. The critical qualifier: the cement board, waterproofing membrane, and all penetrations must be installed correctly. Improperly waterproofed steel stud outdoor kitchens in Oklahoma’s climate will allow moisture infiltration that causes finish cracking and, eventually, frame corrosion at moisture-exposed fastener points.

Well-built steel stud outdoor kitchens perform well and last 15–25+ years. Poorly built ones fail in under 5. The method is only as good as the installer’s attention to waterproofing detail.

ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) Frames

Insulated concrete forms — foam blocks that act as both formwork and insulation while concrete is poured into them — are an emerging option for premium outdoor kitchen construction. ICF walls are extremely strong, thermally insulated, and weather-resistant. The insulation value also means refrigerators and other cooling appliances built into an ICF kitchen work more efficiently in Oklahoma’s summer heat.

ICF outdoor kitchens are the highest-cost frame option and require contractors experienced with ICF construction. They’re most commonly specified for very high-end outdoor kitchen builds where cost is secondary to long-term performance and premium quality.

Which Frame VistaScapes Recommends for Oklahoma Builds

For most outdoor kitchen projects in Broken Arrow and the Tulsa metro, VistaScapes uses CMU (concrete block) frames as our preferred structural system. The durability and weather resistance of concrete block align with the long-term permanence that homeowners investing in a premium outdoor kitchen should expect. For projects where cost or schedule are primary constraints, we can also build with properly detailed steel stud and cement board construction.
