Oklahoma winters are moderate compared to northern states, but they’re not gentle. Broken Arrow and the Tulsa area see freeze events every winter — sometimes sustained hard freezes, occasionally ice storms, and regular temperature swings that stress outdoor materials. Properly winterizing your outdoor kitchen before the freeze season protects your investment and prevents the most common weather-related damage.
Water Line Winterization: The Most Critical Step
If your outdoor kitchen has a sink, the water supply lines must be properly drained and isolated before hard freeze conditions. A supply line left pressurized and full of water during an Oklahoma freeze event will burst — the repair involves opening the masonry or countertop structure to access the line.
Proper winterization of outdoor kitchen water lines:
- Close the dedicated shut-off valve for the outdoor kitchen water supply (this should be an accessible interior valve — if yours doesn’t have one, add it before next season)
- Open the outdoor faucet to release pressure and drain residual water from the line
- Open any access doors to the sink cabinet area to allow air circulation that prevents residual moisture from freezing
- Blow out the lines with compressed air if you have significant water pressure in the run
Grill and Appliance Winterization
Oklahoma winters don’t require full appliance removal — the temperatures aren’t severe enough to damage properly covered outdoor appliances. What they do require is protection from moisture and freezing rain events.
- Deep clean the grill before covering — remove grease, carbon buildup, and food debris that can attract pests and accelerate corrosion over winter
- Coat cast iron grates with a thin layer of high-temperature cooking oil to prevent rust
- Cover the grill with a properly fitted cover designed for your model — generic covers that don’t fit well trap moisture against the appliance surface
- Shut off the gas supply valve at the appliance if your grill has one, in addition to the main supply shut-off
- If your outdoor refrigerator will not be used through winter, clean it thoroughly, prop the door slightly open (to prevent mold), and shut off power
Countertop and Stone Surface Care Before Winter
Fall is the right time to reseal concrete and natural stone countertops if they’re due for sealing. Applying sealer before the freeze season protects against water infiltration that can cause freeze-thaw damage in the countertop surface. A simple water bead test tells you if resealing is needed: pour a small amount of water on the countertop. If it beads and rolls, the sealer is intact. If it absorbs, reseal before winter.
Pergola Structure Inspection
Before winter, inspect the pergola structure for anything that could become a problem under ice or wind load:
- Tighten any loose hardware — post base bolts, beam-to-post connections, rafter attachments
- Look for splits or checks in lumber that have expanded over summer — seal with exterior wood sealer
- Clear debris from any horizontal surfaces where ice could accumulate and add load
- If the pergola has string lights, consider removing them for ice storm season — ice accumulation on string lights can overload attachments
Full Winterization Checklist
- ☑ Shut off and drain outdoor water supply lines
- ☑ Deep clean grill and coat grates with cooking oil
- ☑ Cover grill with a properly fitted cover
- ☑ Shut off gas supply valves
- ☑ Clean and power down outdoor refrigerator (if not using in winter)
- ☑ Reseal concrete or stone countertops if needed
- ☑ Inspect and tighten pergola hardware
- ☑ Inspect stone veneer and mortar joints for cracking
- ☑ Check access door hinges and latches — lubricate with silicone lubricant
- ☑ Store outdoor cushions and accessories indoors
