Outdoor Patio Furniture Cleaning and Protection Broken Arrow OK | Seasonal Guide

by | May 27, 2026 | Uncategorized

You invest in quality outdoor furniture to complement your patio, pergola, or outdoor kitchen — but Oklahoma’s climate works against you: intense UV, summer heat, humidity, hail, ice, and wind. A little seasonal maintenance extends furniture life significantly and keeps everything looking sharp.

By Material: What Each Needs

Powder-Coated Aluminum

The most low-maintenance option available. Aluminum doesn’t rust. The powder coat protects the frame almost indefinitely if not chipped or scratched. Annual cleaning: rinse with a hose, wipe down with soap and water if needed, apply a coat of car wax once a season to protect the finish and make future cleaning easier. If the powder coat is chipped, touch up with color-matched automotive spray to prevent oxidation at the exposed spot.

Teak

Teak is naturally oily and weather-resistant. Left untreated, it weathers to a silver-gray — some homeowners prefer this look. If you want to maintain the original honey-brown color, apply teak oil annually after cleaning. Clean with teak cleaner (diluted oxalic acid-based products work well) before oiling. In Broken Arrow’s direct sun, plan to oil every 12 months. Store or cover teak during ice events — teak handles Oklahoma summers fine but can crack through repeated freeze-thaw cycles in exposed joint areas.

All-Weather Wicker (Resin)

Quality all-weather wicker uses a UV-stabilized resin wrap over an aluminum frame — it holds up well in Oklahoma with basic care. Cheap wicker uses lower-grade resin that becomes brittle in 3–5 years of direct sun exposure. Cleaning: rinse with a hose, use a soft brush with soapy water to clear debris from weave channels. Bring inside or cover during hail events — hail can crack wicker weave on any grade of furniture.

Wrought Iron and Steel

Heavy and durable, but will rust if the protective coating is scratched. Inspect annually for rust spots. Sand with fine grit, prime with a rust-inhibiting primer, and touch up with exterior metal paint. Oklahoma’s summer humidity accelerates rust on any exposed steel. Wrought iron’s weight is an advantage in wind events — it’s not going anywhere.

Cushions and Fabric

Sunbrella and similar solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are the standard for outdoor cushions in Oklahoma. They resist UV fading significantly better than standard outdoor polyester. Cleaning: spray with a hose, apply a solution of 1 cup bleach + 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of water, scrub with a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and let dry completely — ideally standing them on edge in sun. Do not store damp cushions in enclosed storage (mold and mildew grow rapidly in Oklahoma’s summer humidity).

Oklahoma-Specific Recommendations

  • Before storm season — Bring in or secure lightweight furniture; Broken Arrow’s spring storm season produces straight-line winds that launch unsecured patio pieces
  • Before ice events — Remove cushions, cover or store lightweight aluminum and wicker; ice accumulation adds weight and freeze-thaw stress at joints
  • After summer UV season — Apply UV protectant to any plastic components (armrests, feet, rope accents); Oklahoma UV is intense enough to degrade most plastics in 3–5 seasons without treatment
