Retaining walls solve real problems: unmanageable slopes, erosion, poor drainage, and the inability to use large sections of your yard because of grade changes. When done right, they also add significant aesthetic value — creating terraces, defining garden zones, and contributing to a landscape that looks intentional and well-designed. When done wrong, they fail within a few years, taking the retained soil with them.
VistaScapes & Design are experienced retaining wall contractors in Broken Arrow and Tulsa, building structural walls engineered for Oklahoma’s specific soil conditions and drainage challenges.
Types of Retaining Walls We Build
Natural Stone Retaining Walls
Oklahoma limestone and imported natural stone create retaining walls with genuine character and permanence. Natural stone walls blend beautifully into landscape settings, complement gardens and water features, and look better as they age. They require more skilled labor to set correctly but provide the most authentic, natural appearance of any retaining wall type.
Concrete Block Retaining Walls
Interlocking concrete retaining wall blocks (Versa-Lok, Allan Block, Belgard) are our most common choice for structural retaining walls in Broken Arrow and Tulsa. They’re engineered for consistent load-bearing performance, come in a range of textures that simulate natural stone, and are highly cost-effective relative to natural stone at similar heights and lengths. Most can be dry-stacked to specified heights without mortar.
Poured Concrete Retaining Walls
For taller walls (4 feet+) and applications requiring the highest structural integrity, poured concrete with rebar reinforcement is often the appropriate solution. These walls are typically finished with stone veneer, stucco, or tile to provide the desired aesthetic while maintaining structural integrity for demanding applications.
Timber Retaining Walls
Pressure-treated timber retaining walls are a cost-effective option for shorter walls (under 3 feet) in garden applications. We use timber walls selectively — they’re appropriate for light-duty garden borders and landscape edging, but we don’t recommend them for structural applications where failure would have significant consequences.
What Makes Oklahoma Retaining Walls Different
Oklahoma’s clay soils create unique challenges for retaining wall construction:
- Drainage is critical: Clay soils retain water and create significant hydrostatic pressure behind walls. Every retaining wall we build includes a gravel drainage backfill and perforated drain pipe at the footing to relieve this pressure — this is what most failed walls lack
- Batter and setback: Walls need to lean into the slope at the correct angle for their height and the soil type they’re retaining — Oklahoma clay requires more conservative batter angles than sandy soils
- Footing depth: Below-frost footings are required for walls that need to remain structurally stable through Oklahoma’s freeze-thaw cycles
- Geogrid reinforcement: Walls over 3 feet typically require geogrid reinforcement layers buried in the backfill — these anchor the wall against the soil mass and prevent the rotation and sliding that brings unreinforced walls down
Retaining Wall Cost in Broken Arrow & Tulsa (2025)
- Concrete block wall (per linear foot, 2–3 ft height): $150–$280/LF
- Concrete block wall (per linear foot, 3–5 ft height with geogrid): $280–$450/LF
- Natural stone wall (per linear foot): $250–$500/LF
- Poured concrete with veneer (per linear foot): $350–$600/LF
Most retaining wall projects in the Broken Arrow area run $8,000–$35,000 depending on total linear footage, height, and material selection. We provide detailed written estimates for every project.
Retaining Wall + Patio Integration
The best retaining wall projects integrate seamlessly with the outdoor living spaces they create. A tiered retaining wall system paired with paver patios at each level — with steps connecting the terraces — creates an outdoor environment that’s dramatically more interesting and usable than a flat yard. We design these integrated systems as a single project, ensuring the walls, patios, steps, and planting areas work together aesthetically and functionally.
